WAGON-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application fried October 26, 1911. Serial No. 656,864.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Emma A. S.\LT7. MAN and ELMER KRABILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Noble and Tayland, respectively, in the counties of Vashington and Henry, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wagon boxes having sectional sides and ends, so that the height of the box may be Varied to suit the load to be carried.
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel and improved fastening for the box sections, whereby said sections may be readily assembled and will be rigidly held in place.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the rear end of the wagon box. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the connection between one of the side walls and the adjoining end of the end-gate. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the locking means of the end-gate sections. Fig. l: is a vertical section showing the locking means for the side wall sections. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the guide strips.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the sides of the wagon box are composed of several sections 10, three being shown, which are connected by a fastening to be presently described. A corresponding number of end gate sections is provided, said sections being indicated at 11, 12, and 13, respectively.
To the outer face of t-he side sections 10 are secured interlocking vertical stems and guides. The top and intermediate sections are provided with guides comprising a metal strip which is L-shaped in cross-section, one of its flanges 14 being bolted or otherwise secured to the side section, and its other Harige 15 being outstanding therefrom. At the top and bottom of the section, the outer edge of the flange 15 is joined to the outer edge of the flange 14: by diagonal cross-pieces 16. Between these cross-pieces the outer edge of the flange 15 is bent inwardly to form a channel 17. The hereindescribed strips which are carried by the top and intermediate sections of the wagon box side are extended below said sections, as indicated at 18 to form a stem which is adapted to be interloeked with the strip of the next section below, said extensions fitting under the cross-pieces 16 and their outstanding flanges seating in the channels 17. The strip of the bottom section of the wagon box has no extension.
In order to lock the sections 10 together, the guide strips of the bottom and intermediate sections carry locking devices which are engageable with the extensions 18. Each of these locking devices comprises an angular latch which is pivoted at its angle, as indicated at 253, between the outstanding flanges 24 of a channeled plate 25 secured to the flange 15 on the outside thereof. In the plate 25 is an opening which is opposite the end of the branch 2G of the latch, and through which opening said branch is adapted to pass into one of a vertical series of perforations 27 in the extension 18. Adjacent to the outer end of the other branch 28 of the latch is located a flat spring 29 having an angular bend which is adapted to be snapped over the outer end of the branch 28 to lock the latch. In operation, the branch 26 is placed in locking position by swinging the branch 28 inwardly, after which the spring 29 is snapped over the end of the last-mentioned branch to lock the latch.
The structure herein described provides a simple and safe fastening for the sections of the wagon box sides, and said sections can be readily assembled and removed, any number thereof being used according to the height it is desired that the wagon box is to have. It will be noted that the latches enter the perforations 27 with a downward swing which tends to jam the parts together and. thus adds to the rigidity of the fastening.
To the inner face of the sections 10 are secured guides for the end gate sections, said guides comprising channeled strips 30 having their flanges 31 outstanding, and between which flanges the ends of the gate sections are received. The channeled strips of the bottom gate section are provided at their lower ends with a depending threaded stem 19 which passes through the sill 20 on which the floor 21 of the wagon box is supported, and is secured by a bolt 22.
The following means are provided for locking the gate sections in the guides: To one of the flanges 31 are secured, at one of their ends, two spring strips 82, having their free ends overlapping and provided with registering slots 33. To the flange is pivoted, at one of its ends, a lever 34 which passes through the slots 33, and carries intermediate its ends a cross-piece 35, a number of Iperforations 3G being made in the lever so that the pin may be adjustably secured thereto. Intermediate their ends, the strips 32 carry latch pins 37 which are adapted to pass through perforations in the fiange 31 and into keeper sockets 38 in one side of the end portion of the gate section which fits between the flanges 31. The strips 32 normally retain the latch pins in locking position. To withdraw the latch pins 37, the lever 34 is swung outwardly, whereupon the pin 35 -pushes the free ends of the strips outwardly and thus withdraws the latch pins. Each gate section is provided with the herein-described locking means.
The ends of the gate sections are covered with sheet metal strips 39. This strip is punched into the sections to form the keeper sockets 33. The bottom of the sockets is beveled so that the gate sections may be withdrawn if the latch pins 37 are not entirely withdrawn.
The bottom end gate section 13 is divided midway between its ends into two parts which are connected by a suitable hinge joint. One of these parts carries an extension board 40 which overlaps the other part and is secured thereto by a suitable fastening 41, whereby the two parts are locked together. This end gate section Copies of this patent may be obtained for is provided for quickly unloading grain. The upper and intermediate gate sections have finger holds l2 to facilitate their removal.
7e claim:
l. In a wagon box, a sectional side wall, guides on said wall sections, stems on the sections fitting in the guides of the sections below, said stems having perforations, angular latches pivoted at their angle to the guides and having one of their branches adapted to enter the perforatioiis, and locking devices engageable with the other branches of the latches.
2. In a wagon boX, a sectional side wall, guides on said wall sections, said guides comprising strips which are L-shaped in cross-section, one of the flanges of the strip being outstanding, spaced cross-pieces between the outer ends of the outstanding flanges and the outer ends of the other flanges, channel bends on the outstanding ange, depending stems on the wall sections fitting in the guides of the section below,
said stems fitting under the cross-pieces, and having an outstanding flange seating in the channel bend, and latches engageable with the stems.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
