To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, INILLIAM J. BOHAN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain. new
and useful Improvements in Car-Door Structure; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to railway cars of the box car type and has for its object to provide an improved side door' structure therefor.

Of course, a single side door. might be made large enough to permit an automobile to be placed in or removed from the box car, but in that event, the door opening would be too large for most purposes and would be the cause of waste of storage space under most usages. Hence, I provide a side door opening of sufiicient' size to permit an automobile, and the like, to be passed therethrough and properly placed within the body of the ear, and in connection with this large door opening, I provide a-main door and a supplemental door, the former of which is used in the ordinary way, and the:
latter of which will be used only when it is necessaryto obtain an extremely large passage.

The car body 1 is provided in its sides with door openings 2 that are much longer than the ordinary or standard box car door opening. The door opening 2 is adapted to be opened and closed by a main door 3, and supplemental door 4, mounted for sliding movements on the side of the car, preferably by the same kind of mountingsand guides generally employed for mounting car side door, to-wit, by means of wheel-equipped brackets 5 on the upper portion ofthe doors, arranged to run on upper rails 6, and held at their lower edges by the usual guide brackets secured to the lower portion of the car body. Preferably, the do )1' 3 is made the size of the ordinary standard side door.
The supplemental door 4, on the inner side of its extended edge, is arovided with a rigidly secured channel-shaped stile 8 that extends from the bottom totop of the door opening 2. One edge of this stile 8 is ex- .tended to form a joint plate 8? that overlaps the joint between the main door 3 and the supplemental door t when both doors are closed. The stile 8 which is secured to the supplemental door 4, has upper and lower end portions of slightly reduced width and which are off-set slightly inward from the door, so as to -afi'ord upper and lowerstop lugs 8 and 8". These so-called stop lugs 8 and 8, when the supplemental door 4 is in a closed position, are arranged to enter, respectively, into channel-shaped stop pockets 9 and 10 rigidly secured, the former to the top of the door opening, and the latter to the, car floor. These channelshaped pockets 9 and 10 are opened at one end, to-wit, at the ends extending in the direction in which the supplemental door must be moved to open it, but when the said supplemental door is moved toward an open position, the stop lugs 8 and 8 move freely out of the stop pockets 9 and 10, but when the supplemental door is moved to a closed position, the said lugs enter the said pockets, and the stile 8 will then brace the said supplemental door against lateral displacement or springing movements.
To look the supplemental door in a closed position with the lugs 8 and 8 seated in the pockets 9 and 10, I provide a lock device including a lock piece 11, preferably in the form ofa wedge, (see particular Fig. 3) and The outer flange of the channel 18 is bolted,
riveted, or otherwise, rigidly secured to the dooret and its inner flange 1s spaced inward therefrom and engages with the outer flange of the channel 12 to form a quite tight joint therewith when the said door 4 is closed. The inner edge of the inner flange of the channel 13 is turned inward to afford a lock flange 13 that engages the adjacent side of the wedge 11. Secured to the side of the car is a stop preferably in the form of a strip 13 with the inner edge of which the lock piece or wedge 11 engages. When the said lock piece or wedge is applied, as shown, in Fig. 3, and an attempt is made to move the supplemental door into an open position, such movement will be prevented by said lock piece which will then be simply pressed between the projecting lock flange i 13 and the inner edge of the stop 1 1. When desired, the same kind of wedge acting lock may be applied to the outer edge of the mam door 3, and in'the drawings, the corresponding elements of this latter noted device are indicated by the same numerals that are used in connection with the supplemental door, as just above described.

The combination with a body having a door-way, of a cooperating slidably mounted door and means for locking said door comprising a lock piece, and cooperating flanged members on said body and on the outer edge of said door, the said lock piece being insertible between said flanged members and removable therefrom, and the said flanged members on said body and door having overlapping interlocking parts.
