tions of the cars, the doors will be thrown violently against their stops and produce a pounding action, which in. a short time tears loose or very greatly damages the door stops, and also damages the doors themselves. When an attempt is made to lock or fasten these doors either at top or bottom, the momentum of the doors, under bumping actions, tilts the doors and produces an up ward or downward pounding action on the door-supporting rails. My improved lock will not only look the door in a closed position, but will serve to lock or secure the door either. entirely open or partly open, and resist the inertia of the door from the center of gravity thereof, so that the door will not be oscillated under bumping strains;

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, with some parts broken away, showingthe body of a box car and illustrating my improved lock applied to one of the side doors thereof; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line m m of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line c as of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail in section on the line a. m of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail in elevation, showing the head of the lock device removed from working position.

hanger brackets 3 equipped with rollers 4 that run on the customary overhead doorsupporting rail 5, so that the door is mounted to slide in the usual way. The lower edge of the door is held against lateral outward swinging movement by the usualguide lugs 4 6 and 7, and when the door is closed, it bears against the usual stop strip 8 secured on the side of the car. In accordance with my invention, a horizontally disposed lock bar 9 is rigidly secured, at one end, to the side of the car,
as shown, by means of anchor bracket 10. This lock bar may be made in various differout forms, but, as shown and preferred, is in the form of a channel iron having, in its lower flange, a plurality of longitudinally spaced perforations 11 Rigidly secured on the car door and embracing the projecting end of the lock bar 9, is a so-called lock head 12, that is adapted to slide on the side bar when the door is moved. This lock head 12 is provided with a depending hub 13, through which works anv upwardly spring,- pressed lock bolt 14, the upper end of which is adapted to enga c any one of the perforations 11 of the loc bar 9. The perforations 11 are so disposed that the lock bolt 14 will Engage therewith to lock the door either in a closed position or in a completely opened position, in any one of several intermediate positions' With this arrangement, as isevident, the door may be locked and held against sliding movements in 'any of the several positions noted, sothat it is thereby prevented from making any initial movement and, hence, fromacquiring any pounding momentum under bumping actions of the cars. Furthermore, as the said bar 9- is locked on the horizontal line that intersects or. approximately intersects the center of gravity of the door. there will be no tend.- ency to rock the door on its supports, when As shown, the door 2 is also provided with a channelshaped casing 15, preferably of sheet metal, alined with the lock head 12, into which the lock bar 9 is adapted to be telescoped when the door is moved into an'open position.
As an efficient means of sealing the car, with the door either in a closed or partly opened position, a secondary lock bolt 16 is passed throughico-incident perforations in the primary lock bolt 14 and in the hub 13 of the lock head. This secpnda'ry bolt 14:, at its projecting end, has a slit or elongated perforation 17, through which the seal is adapted to be passed.
The above described lock device, of course, dispenses with the original hasp and lock usually employed in connection With car doors of the above noted character.

The combination with a door slidably mounted thereon, of a-lock device comprising a lock bar secured to one of the members, at one end, extending in the direction of the travel of the door, and arranged to permit said door to slide between said car body and lock bar and a lock head secured on the other of said members and slidable on, said lock .bar, and means for locking together said bar and head, to secure the said door in difi'erent positions, the said lock bar being extended on a line that approximately intersects the center of gravity of said door.
3. The combination with a car body and a door mounted for horizontal sliding movements thereon, of a horizontal lock bar se- .cured to said car body, at one end, and arranged to permit said door to slide between said car body and lock bar and a lock head secured to said door and slidable on said lock bar, andprovided with a lock bolt engageable with perforations on said lock bar, to secure said door in different positions.
