SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 746,456, dated. December 8, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD CARLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at B0- land Park, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing openings in the sides of cars, the object being the production of a door which shall be so constructed that it will not warp and be arranged relative to the opening so that dust, cinders, water, and snow cannot pass to the interior of the car, which shall be provided with a fastening device that is adapted to be operated from the inside of the car, which shall be easily operated, and which, withal,
shall constitute a superior means for performing the required functions.
With this end or purpose in view my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the application of the principle.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of part of a car side, showing the movable door in its ing the rail and both filling-strips in top plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perpendicular section of Fig.-1, taken on the irregular line 00 m, which passes through the edge of the door, and showing the fastening device upon the interior of the car. Fig. 4 illustrates in elevation a corner of the door anda hanger with lips which are adapted to move over the recess .or break in the rail. Fig. 5 illustrates .inelevation a corner of the door, the recess or break in the rail, and the hanger having the lips at the top cut away, so that the shank of the hanger can enter the recess in the rail. Referring to the, several figures of the drawings, the letter A designates the sheathing of the car'side; B, the plate; 0, the belt rail; D, the perpendicular posts which extend from the floor to the plate; E, the outside boards of the door running in perpendicular directions; F, the inside boards of the door arranged at right angles to the boards E; G, a metallic plate secured to the edge of the boards F upon the inside of the door; H, notches or recesses in the plate; I, a locking device J hooks upon the locking device adapted to enter the notches H in the metallic plate; K, the handle of the locking device; L, staples secured to the post adjacent the dooropening and within which the locking device reciprocates M, hangers with lips which hookjover the top edge of the guide-rail; N, the'rear edges of the hook portion of one of the hangers, said edges being located above the top surface of the guide-rail, so as to allow the shank of the hanger to enter the recess in the guide-rail; O, the guide-rail supported above the opening inthe wall of the car and extended some distance one side of said opening; P, a filling-strip located between the rail and carwall at the right of the door-opening; P, a tapering filling-strip located between the rail and the wall of the car, so that the guiderail will lie in a plane oblique to the plane of the car-Wall and one end of the rail be nearer the wall of the car than the opposite end thereof; Q, a recess between the adjacent ends of the rail where the ends are spaced apart and the adjacent ends of the fillingstrips; R, a U-shaped iron located within the recess and secured to the ends of the rail and also to the wall of the car.
S designates stops secured to the wall of the car, one of them being located at the edge of the opening through the wall and adapted to engage the lower corner of the door and hold it so it cannot move outwardly when closed; T, an operating-handle on the door; V, a guide-rod secured to the wall of the car below the door-opening and extending one side thereof, and U is a chain having one end attached to the lower part of the movable upon the guide-rod.
Assuming the door to be closed, to open the door and the other end provided with a ring same it is necessary to disengage the hooks upon the locking device from the notches in the plate G, then to move the edge of the door and the hanger, which is adapted to enter the recess Q, to a position so that the hanger will be in line with the guide-rail, and finally to pull the door by means of the handle away from the opening to a position one side thereof, the chain U preventing the lower edge of the door from swinging too far outwardly. To close and lock the door, the preceding steps are repeated in an inverse order.
It will be observed that when the door is open it-lies in a plane some distance from the wall of the car, and that when it is moved to a closed position the left-hand edge of the boards F come into frictional contact with the edge of the Wall which bounds the opening, but that the right-hand edge of the door is not in contact with the wall of the car. To cause the door to fill the opening, the right-hand edge of the door and the hanger are moved inwardly, the hanger entering the recess between the ends of the filling-strips, and when closed it will be observed that the outer boards of the door lap over the edge of the opening through the wall upon all four much as changes and modifications may be introduced at the will of the manufacturer without constituting substantial departures.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a car having an opening in the wall, of a guide-rail made in two parts, one part being'located above the said opening and in a vertical plane oblique to the plane of the car-wall and the other part being in line with the first part and located at one side of the opening, the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail being spaced apart adjacent the perpendicular edge of the wall bounding the opening and forming a recess; a U-shaped iron located in the recess and secured to the car-wall and the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail; filling-pieces between the two parts of the rail and the carwall; a door; two hangers secured to the door and having hooked portions at their upper ends which engage and lap over the edge of the rail, one of the said hangers having a shank which is adapted to enter the recess Q between the adjacent ends of the two parts 7 ofthe railand the hook portion thereof to rest upon the U-shaped iron, and the other hanger adapted. to overlap theopen space between the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail when the door is moved from in front of the opening and the shank not enter the recess; and means for securing the door in position when closed.

The combination with a car having an opening in the wall, of a guide-rail made in two parts, one part being located above the said opening and in a vertical plane oblique to the plane of the car-wall and the other part being in line with the first part and located at one side of the opening, the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail being spaced apart adjacent the perpendicular edge of the wall bounding the opening and forming a recess; a U-shaped iron located in the recess and secured to the car-wall and the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rails; filling-pieces between the two parts of the rail and the carwall; a door made of two layers of boards E and F arranged at angles to each other, the layer of boards F being adapted to enter the opening in the wall, and the edges of the boards E to engage the'edges of the wall bounding the opening and overlap; two hangers secured to the door and having hooked portions at their upper ends which engage and lap over the edge of the rail, one of the said hangers having a shank which is adapted to enter the recess Q between the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail and the hook portion thereof to rest upon the U-shaped iron, and'the other hanger adapted to overlap the open space between the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail when the door is moved from in front of the openingand the shank not enter the recess; a stop for securing one edge of the door when closed; and fastening means upon the inside of the car for detachably securing the opposite edge of the door.
3. The combination with a car having an opening in the wall located above the floor and bounded by the two posts D D the beltrail and the plate, of a guide-rail made in two parts, one part being located above the said opening and in a vertical plane oblique to the plane of the car-wall and the other part being in line with the first part and located at one side of the opening, the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail being spaced apart ad jacent the perpendicular edge of the wall bounding the opening and forming a recess; a U-shaped iron located in the recess and secured to the car-wall and the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail; filling-strips between the two parts of the rail and the carwall; a door; two hangers secured to the door and having hooked portions at their upper ends which engage and lap over the edge of the rail, one of the said hangers having a shank which is adapted to enter the recess Q between the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail and the hook portion thereof to rest upon the U-shaped iron, and the other hanger adapted to overlap the open space between the adjacent ends of the two parts of the rail when the door is moved from in front of the opening and the shank not enter the recess; a rod located below the oar-door opening and extending beyond the opening; a. chain fixed to the door at one end and at the other end engagingand movable on the rod, to prevent the door swinging outwardly at the bottom when open; and fastening means upon
