JAMES HOOK AND WILLIAM RODNEY, OF MANILLA, IOWA.
CAR-DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,934.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMns HOOK and WILLIAM C. RODNEY, citizens of the United .States, residing at Manilla, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car door fasteners and has for its primary object to provide a simple, reliable and eficient device of this character whereby the door may be securely held in its closed position or moved and held in a partly open position, wherebythe interior of the car may be ventilated.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing our improved car door locked in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, the car door being locked in a partially open position; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.; Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the side wall of a car which is provided with the usual door opening 6. At one side of this door opening, the vertical post 7 is secured and a similar post 8 is secured upon the side wall of the car in spaced relation to the opposite edge of the opening 6.
Upon the car door 15 a lever 23 is fulcrumed as at 24 between the metal bars or plates 25 which are secured to the face of the door. One of these bars is preferably formed with a hand loop 26. To the upper end of the lever 23 which projects above the bars 25, a latch member 27 is pivotally connected, as shown at 28. This latch member is movable through a guide loop 29 secured upon the car door and is formed adjacent to its other end with a cylindrical enlargement 30 having a central opening or bore.
31 designates the keeper plate which is secured upon the door post 7 and is formed with an outwardly projecting flange 32 having a vertically extending elongated slot 33' therein, the upper end of which is enlarged, as at 34:. To a short chain 35 which is suitably secured at one of its ends to the post 7,
a locking bolt 36 is attached. This bolt is adapted to be inserted downwardly through the opening in the enlargement 30 on the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan, 12, 1915, p
latch member 27 and is preferably provided with a slot through which a sealing band is adapted to be inserted, theband be ing also passed through an additional slot 37 provided in the flange of. the keeper plate 31. I Q When the door is moved to its closed position, the enlargement-30 onthe latch member 27 passes through the enlarged upper end 3& of the slot 33 in the keeper. The
latch member is then moved downwardly into the lower portion of said slot and the lever 23 moved to a substantially vertical position upon the car door. This lever is engaged between spaced lugs 39 on a plate 38 which is secured to the face of the car door adjacent its lower edge. It will be apparent thatthe latch member 27 is thus drawn to the right and the enlargement thereof engaged againstthe flange 32 of the keeper 31. The bolt 36 is inserted through the opening in the end of the latch member so that said bolt and the lever 23 provide, what is in effect, a double lock for the door and serve to securely hold the same in its closed position.
When it is desired to ventilate the car, the I lever 23 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, the bolt 36 remaining in the end of the latch member '27. When the lever 23 is moved to this position, it will be obvious that the member 27 is shifted to the left,
thus permitting of a movement of the car door away from the post 7 until the locking bolt '36 engages the flange on the keeper plate. This movement of the door is sufficient to allow air to freely pass to the in terior of the car. Of course, when it is desired to move the door to its fully open position, the bolt 36 is removed and the door;
then shifted tothe right upon the track rail 9. The enlargement 30 upon the end of the latch member 27 moves through the upper enlarged end 34 of the slot in the keeper.
From the above description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction, manner of operation and end of said latch member to secure the door several advantages of our invention Will be clearly and fully understood.
While we have shown and described the present preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts employed, it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of several modifications therein and we therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes which may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
We claim:
1. A car door fastener including a lever pivotally mounted adjacent to one of its ends upon the car door, a shiftable latch member pivotally connected to said end of the lever, a keeper plate secured to one of the door posts and having a slot through which one end of the latch member projects, and means removably mounted in the latter in'a fully closed position or in a partially open position when said lever is adjusted to different positions upon the door.
2. The combination with a car provided with a door opening and a post at one side thereof, of a door mounted for sliding movement upon the car wall, a lever fulcrunied adjacent one of its ends upon said door, a shiftable latch member pivotally connected to one end of said lever, a keeper plate secured upon the door post and having an elongated slot enlarged at one end, said latch member being provided with an enlargement having an opening, said enlargement being adapted to pass through the enlarged end of said slot, a locking bolt adapted for insertion through the opening in said enlargement, means on the car door to hold said lever against movement and retain the latch member in one position with respect to the keeper whereby the door is locked in its fully closed position, said lever being movable to shift the latch member and permit of the movement of the door to a partially open position whereby the car may be ventilated.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiiX our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.

FRANK PROESCHOLDT.
