Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Apr. 16, 1912.
Application filed July 17, 1911. Serial No. 638,876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARA PARSONS, a subject of the King of England, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is the provision of an efiicient and inexpensively constructed sash-lock which is adapted for securing at selected positions either or both of the sashes of a window.
The invention consists in a lock having two bolts which are arranged to be respectively engaged in spaced holes provided in the window-frame and in a side bar of the upper sash; and a controller provided in the casing whereby the bolts may be positively operated to engage or disengage them from the frame and sash holes.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view partly in front elevation and partly in vertical section of portions of a window with my invention applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken through X--X of Fig. 1 and representing in the former the lower sash locked to the window-frame, and in Fig. 3 the lower sash is shown as locked to both the windowframe and to the upper sash. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the lock shown detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the lock bolts. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the cover of the lock casing.
The reference numeral 1 designates a side bar of a window-frame; 2 is the meeting rail of the lower sash; and 3 is a side bar of the upper sash. The side bar of the window frame is provided with a series of spaced holes 4: disposed one above the other, and the side bar 3 of the upper sash is similarly provided with spaced holes 5. The holes 4 and 5 are desirably lined with socket pieces 4' and 5.
Secured by screws 6 to the rail 2 of the lower sash is a lock casing 7 provided with openings 8 and 9 in its side and end walls 3 a d 9 for the a c mmoda n f b lts 10 and 11 so that the axes of the latter will respectively correspond with the axes of the holes 4 and 5 when the sashes are positioned at suitable heights. Web pieces, as 12, Fig. 6, depend from the casing cover 7 to serve as guides for said bolts. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the bolts are provided at their inner ends with downwardly directed hooks 10 and 11.. Within the casing is the boltshifter 14 having two rectangularly arranged arms 14 and 14'. Said shifter is provided with an L-shaped slot whose branches 15 and 16 extend longitudinally of the shifter arms 14: and 14:", as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for the reception of the aforesaid bolt hooks 10 and 11'.
17 is a stud rigidly secured to the bottom of the casing 7 and extending upwardly into the shifter-slots.
18 is a knob whereby the shifter is manipulated and is connected to the latter by a stem 18 which extends through a slot 19 provided in the casing-cover 7.
The operation of the invention is as follows: By sliding the shifter 14: to the right or left the bolt 10 is correspondingly moved to project the bolt into or retract it from a hole 4 in the window frame 1. During these movements of the shifter the bolt 11 must be in its inoperative position (see Fig. 2) so as to allow the shifter slot part 16 to be in alinement with the bolt hook 11 and the stud 17. When the bolt 10 has been shot into a hole in the frame the stud 17 will occupy a position at the juncture of the two slot parts 15 and 16, whence it allows the shifter to be moved into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3 to accordingly project the bolt 11 into a hole 5 of the upper sash, as represented in the view. The hooked ends 10 and 11 being slidably engaged within the shifter slot permits of the bolts being individually and positively operated, as will be understood.
What I claim, is-
