Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH TAYLOR, OF ORRVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CRYSTAL BURIAL CASE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BURIAL-CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,776, dated January 20, 1880.
Application filed October 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, JOSEPH TAYLOR, of Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Caskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my burial-casket, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is adetail sectional view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention relates to burial-caskets;
and-it consists in the improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. O
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the cast-iron top, which is provided with a glass, B, and secured to the castiron rim 0 by means of screws D.
E designates the bottom, cast with the two parallel strips F upon its under side, which strips are employed to prevent rolling of the casket, which, if more than two strips or no strips at all are employed, will sometimes oc- The bottom section of the casket is also formed with a continuous flange, F, and with the dovetailed tenons G H, the former of which are at its ends, while the latter are at its sides, substantially as shown.
The end sections or castings I of the casket are formed with the exterior raised panels, '6, and with the dovetailed recesses, which fitupon the tenons G of the bottom section.
The detachable rim 0 is formed with a continuous flange, c, and adapted to be fitted in place upon the ends I and I have illustrated the rim and bottom as being formed with lugs K, between which the corners of the two end castings will be fitted when the parts are adjusted together in proper position.
The glass sides are secured in place between the holding-pieces L and the flange of the rim G at the t0p,-and between the flange F of the bottom and recessed holding-pieces M, which are fitted upon the tenons H.
The wires Nare cast in the rim 0, and turned back or bent into hooks for the linings.
When the several sections constituting the bottom, ends, rim, and the glass sides have been fitted together, as hereinbefore described, bolts 0 are passed through the rim and bottom, so that the whole may be tightened up by means of nuts upon the said bolts.
The lid or cover-frame is formed with a suitable number of holes, through which screws are passed, so as to secure the same upon the rim.
Other fastening devices may be employed in this connection when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In a burial-casket, the detachable castmetal ends 1, formed with dovetailed recesses, and the bottom section, E, with dovetailed tenons fitting into the recesses of the ends, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In a burial-casket, the bottom section, E, with dovetailed tenons H at its sides, and the holding-pieces M, formed with dovetailed recesses and fitted upon the tenons, for the purpose of holding the glass sides in position, substantially as set forth.
3. The glass sides, rim 0, with pieces L for holding said sides at the top, and the bottom E, with tenons H and pieces M fitted thereon, for holding the glass sides at the bottom, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH TAYLOR.
