CHARLES H. HISER, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SPRINGFIELD METALLIC CASKET COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
COFFIN-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11 1912.
Application filed March 22,1909. Serial No. 484,980.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HIsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coflin Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps for grave vaults or shipping cases for burial caskets.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp which may be quickly and easily adjusted and which will be effective in operation.
The invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the shipping case or grave vaults showing one of my improved clamps applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail.
Like parts are represented by similar characters of reference in the several views.
In the said drawings, a represents the lid or upper portion of the shipping case, or grave vault, as the case may be, preferably constructed of sheet metal which is bent to form a laterally-extending flange (0 the outer edge of which is down-turned as indicated at (4 a is the lower portion of the case, the metal of which is bent upon itself to form a laterally-extending flange, a having an upturned port-ion a A bearing plate, a, is preferably secured to the upper side of the flange (t the outer edge of this plate being up-turned as indicated at a The upper portion, 1), of the clamp has pivoted to the inner side thereof a clamping lever, 0, formed with a cam-shaped portion, 0 which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The lower portion, d, of the clamp is pivoted at the lower end thereof to a plate, e, through the medium of angularly extending arms, 6 preferably formed integrally with the plate, which is secured to the under side of the flange a The part b has a perforated boss 5 and the part (Z a screw-threaded boss, 6Z1. EX- tending loosely through the boss 19 and screwed into the boss d is a screw, f, the upper end of which is squared to receive a wrench or other tool and is also provided with a collar, f By means of this screw, the distance to which the respective parts 5 and d may be separated is regulated; the screw being adjusted to any desired position in the boss, (Z and theboss 6 being freely movable on the screw but being confined in its movement by the boss (Z and the collar f To prevent the respective parts Z) and cl from turning in relation to each other, I provide on one of the parts, shown in the drawings as the part b, With a pin, 6 adapted to extend into a recess, d in the part, 0?. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1). I i
In assembling the device, the plate 6 is first secured to the upper side of the flange a. After the upper part of the casing has been placed in position, the device will be swung about the pivot-a1 connection between the arms 6 and the part (i, and the clamping lever operated to bring the cam-shaped portion thereon in contact with the plate a. The adjustable connection between the parts I) and (Z, comprising the screw f, provides means for adjusting the parts of the clamp so that the clamping lever will have its greatest effect to securely clamp the respective parts of the case together, and compress the rubber gasket, g, between the flanges. The upturned flange, al acts to prevent the cam lever from slipping off the plate, a, although, if desired, the plate may be dispensed with and an indenture made in the flange, a to receive the cam-shaped portion of the lever.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a clamp for the parts of a casing of the character described, the combination of the clamping device pivotally connected at,
one end with one part of said casing, means arranged at the opposite end of said clampingdevice to engage the other part of said casing, said clamping device being formed of two part-s, and means for adjusting the respective parts of said clamping device with respect to each other.
2. In a clamp for the parts of a casing of the character described, the combination, with the laterally extending adjacent flanges on the respective parts of said casing, of a clamping device pivotally connected to one part of said casing; said clamping device having means for engaging the flange of the other part of said casing, said clamping device being formed of two parts, and means for adjusting the respective parts of said clamping device with respect to each other, substantially as specified.
3. In a clamp for the parts of a casing of the character described, the combination, with the laterally extending adjacent flanges on the respective parts of said casing, of a clamping device pivotally connected to one part of said casing; said clamping device having a pivoted clamping lever to engage the flange of the other part of said casing, said clamping device being formed of two parts,'and means for adjusting the respective parts of said clamping device With respect to each other, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the character described, laterally extending adjacent flanges, a tWopart clamp, one part being pivotally connected to one of said flanges and the other part having a clamping lever, means for ad justing the distance to Which said parts may I be separated, and a guide pin on one part adapted to enter a recess in the other part, substantially as specified.
5. In a clamp for the members of a casing of the character described, the combination of a two-part clamp, one part being pivotally connected to one member of said casing and the other part having a clamping lever, means for adjusting the parts of said clamp with respect to each other, and means for preventing the respective parts of said clamp from turning in relation to each other.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set (V Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
