APPLICATION FILED AUG. 25, 1909.

ANDREW MALINOVSZKY, 0E SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
CASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed August 25, 1908. Serial N 0. 450,182.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MALINOW SZKY, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at Schenectady, Schenectady county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to caskets and coflins, and to linings therefor. Its object is to produce an air and liquid tight casket, which is especially advantageous in the case of interment after noxious or infectious disease, or wherever a very secure sealing of the body is required.
Further objects of the invention will appear in this specification and be pointed out in the claims.
The material of which my casket is composed is preferably a cement or plastic composition, but any desired material may be employed, as no claim is made to the composition herein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a casket embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section through the plane'2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section similar to that of Fig. 2 of a modified form of the device; Fig. 4 is a cross section or the casket lining; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the casket of Fig. 1.
l1 designates a casket, of which 12 is the bottom; 13, a side; 14, a top molding; 15, a column or pilaster; 16, a cover; and 17, a detachable panel in the cover 16. As shown, the bottom 12 is rabbeted, as at 18, for the side and end boards, which are flanged at their lower edges to enter this rabbet. and at their upper, edges to engage with the top molding 14. Thin molding 14 and the cover 16 are provided with cooperating grooves 19, 20, extending throughout their length and width, for the reception of a cord or filler 21 of rubber composition or other compressible material. The pilasters 15 are made hollow to permit the passage through each of a bolt 22, engaging at its lower end in a nut 23, recessed into the bottom 12, and at its upper end with a nut 2% above the cover 16. The panel 17 may be secured in place in any well known or desired manner, and may have suitably secured beneath it a glass panel 25, having a frame 26.
The casket 11 may have suitable handles 27 of any usual pattern.
W'ithin the casket 11 is a lining, consisting of a body portion 28 and a cover 29, formed of stamped or pieced sheet metal, preferably not subject to destructive oxidation. The body and cover are each formed with a flange, marked 30, 31 respectively, preferably of curved form with their concave faces toward each other, extending all around their edges, and adapted to be received in the grooves 19, 20 of the cover and sides of the casket.
It will be seen that when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 3, the compressible filler 21 will be received between the flanges 30, 31 of the metallic lining, and into the grooves 19, 20 of the casket cover and body; and that when the cover 16 is screwed down, either by the bolts 22 or by any other well known means, the filler will be strongly compressed and will act as an eflicient seal. The metal lining 28, 29 may itself be lined with a cloth or drapery, indicated in Fig. at.
It is obvious that the pilasters, moldings,
etc., shown in the drawings, form 110 part and that the casket or of the invention;
simple or as ornate form coflin may be in as as may be desired.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In combination, a casket comprising a body and av cover, both provided with registering grooves extending all around their meeting faces; a metallic lining also comprising a body and a cover, each provided with an outwardly and oppositely extending flange adapted to be received within the grooves of said casket body and cover respectively; a compressible filler placed between said grooves and between said flanges; and means, as bolts, for securing said casket body and cover together and for compressing said filler between said lining flanges.
A metallic casket lining comprising a body and a cover, each provided with a flange extending outwardly all around its periphery, each of said flanges being oppositely curved to engage on opposite sides of a compressible filler, substantially for the purposes specified.
