Description

PATENT-ED-JULY 21, 19o3.-. E; s. SMITH. SAFETY DEVICE, APPLICATION FILED APR. 30, 1903.
v1N0 IODEL.
fies. 2
E Ian/HAW UNITED STATES Patented July 21, 1903..
PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA S. SMITH, OF ATTLEBOR O, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE R. F. SIMMONS COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
SAFETY DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,142, dated July 21, 1903;
' Application filed April 30, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accom panying drawings.
My invention relates to devices used. in connection with watches, lockets, and similar articles for insuring the latter against accidental displacement.
It is sought by my attachment to remedy the annoyance and damage incidentto the fall of a watch or similar article from its position intermediate a belt and the wearers clothing or between any two articles of wearing-apparel where frictional engagement has heretofore of necessity been largely relied upon, especially in hot weather.
While particularly adapted to the use of ladies, the structure of my improvement makes it obviously applicable to a gentlemans chain.
To the elimination of the above disadvantages my invention is primarily directed; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my novel device detached, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same engaging a watch or locket in operative position.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings, a. is the head, b the bar, which is outwardly bowed, as shown, and c the tongue of a watclrswivel engaged through the ring 01 with a watch;chain e.
Fixed to the upper portion of the'head a or integral therewith'is an upwardly-directed Serial No. 154,986. (No model.)
The application of my device is set forth in Fig. 2. The watch 19 is pendent between and frictionally engaged by the belt 1' and cloth- I ing s, and the hook member arches the upper margin of the belt and compresses the latter against the swivel-bar, thereby preventing a release of the watch from its frictional seat either upwardly or downwardly. The hook, moreover, because of its upturned portion, supports the swivel well down within the belt, so that there are no projecting portions liable to catch or become entangled in adjacent articles.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described the combination with a swivel having a head, a ring attached to the upper end thereof and an outwardly-bowed depending body, of a hook having one end affixed to the head, said hook having an upwardly-bowed portion that extends to a point contiguous to the top of the ring and a depending free spring-tongue that coacts with the outwardly-bowed body to form a restricted entrance-opening.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA S. SMITH.
Witnesses:
