PATENT OFFICE.
PAPER FILE AND BINDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 732,192, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed F bruary 1 1903- Serial No. 145,512..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns DIBBLE KENYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Files and Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper files and binders and contemplates the production of an improved appliance of this character possessing extreme simplicity of construction, enabling its manufacture at a very low cost compared with files and binders of analogous types, and which in practice is capable of being manipulated to bind papers uniformlyin an expeditious manner.
Other advantages possessed by my improved appliance are set forth in the following description of the details of construction and operation, in connection with which at tention is called to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention in its preferred form, it being understood that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention defined by the concluding claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a paper file and binder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the same. is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the cover. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the needle.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A denotes a casing or box, which may be of cylindrical form, as shown, and B is a cover for the casing or box provided with a depending flange b. While I have shown in connection with the casing or box a single needle for perforating and threading the papers at one corner of the latter, it is within the scope of my invention to provide more than one needle whereby to fasten the papers at more than one point, and I also contemplate, as will appear in the claims, to mount the needle or needles on a support, not necessarily a casing or box, although I prefer to employ a (No model.)
receptacle, such as shown, for one or more balls or spools 0, dependent upon the number of needles employed. Obviously the easing or box when employed may be of any desired form, and it is preferable that the casing or box be weighted or else secured to a rigid base-as, for instance, a desk or table.
Secured to the cover to extend above the same is a cap D, having a fiat top d and a depending flange d, and preferably the cap is fastened to the cover by tongues (1 d integral with the cap and bent to one side after entering slots in the cover. In the cap is an opening, at which is a sleeve 6, the latter receiving and confining the lower end of a needle F. The needle is split at its lower end and spread, as shown at f, to frictionally engage the sleeve and prevent its accidental Withdrawal, and said lower end preferably bears against the top of the cover B. The needle has an eye f, receiving the thread or cord 0', which passes through holes 1) (1 respectively, provided in the cover and cap.
G H designate guides for alining the sheets whereby to produce a uniform bundle. Each guide consists, preferably, of a single piece of wire bent upon itself and having lower ends bent at a right angle. The ends g of the guide G occupy holes in the flange b of the cover and are confined by a clamp 7; on the cover, while the ends it of the guide H occupy holes in the cap-flange d and a clamp j on the cap. Each guide is adjustable, as shown by the dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4, the adjusted positions being maintained by the clamps, whereby the perforation and threadingof the sheets may occur at any desired point. Obviously where more than one needle is employed an additional guide or guides may be employed to insure the proper registering of the sheets.
In practice the sheets are held above the needle with two edges in contact with the guides, and pressure being applied the sheets are forced downwardly to cause the needle to perforate them, the needle-eye being previously threaded to cause the cord or'thread to extend through and beyond the sheets, after which the cord or thread is severed and the ends fastened together to bind the sheets against separation. It will be noted that the ICO guides extend beyond the height of the needle, so that the sheets are brought into register previously to the impaling operation.
It is the purpose of the invention to provide for an accumulation of orderly-arranged papers previously to the binding operation,
as in the case of all temporary binders, and
gaging an opening in the support.
3. A paper file and binder consisting of a support, a sleeve carried by the support, a thread or cord carrying needle having a lower split end frictionally engaging said sleeve,
and sheet-registering guides on the support.
4. A paper file and binder consisting of a support having an opening, a sleeve at said opening, a thread or cord carrying needle having a lower split end frictionally engaging said sleeve, and a thread or cord opening in the support adjacent to said sleeve.
5. A paper file and binder consisting of a thread or cord receptacle, a top having a sleeve, a needle confined at its lower end in said sleeve, an opening in the top for the thread or cord, and adjustable sheet-registering guides carried by the receptacle-top and means for maintaining said adjustment.
6. A paper file and binder consisting of a thread or cord receptacle, a cover therefor, a
cap on the cover having a sleeve, a needle.
confined at its lower end in said sleeve, and
adjustable guides carried by the cover and top.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MOSES DIBBLE KENYoN.
