LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
weones.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1918. Serial No. 241,912.
To all whom t may oncerm l Be it known that I, CHESTER Gr. VAN
. BUREN, a citizen yof the United States, and
a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders,of which the following is a specification. a
Myinvention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders, fand has for its object the production of -a devicer of this character which will be of durable and economical construction, and which will permit `,of ready and Yexpeditious insertionv and removal of sheets.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements .ofparts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to theaccompanying drawings forming part of Athis specification, and inwhich,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder embodying the invention, t
Fig. 2, an enlarged fragmental plan view of one ofthe covers of the binder,
Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig.y 2, of the other cover of the binder,
Figli, a Vfragmental detail section through the inner edge portion of the binder, thel section being taken through one of the yfastening means thereof, f Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3 i
Fig.6, a plan view of the inner edge portion of a binder of slightly modified form,
Fig.l 7, Fig. 6,
Fig. 8, a plan view of the inner edge portion of another form ofthe binder,
Fig. 9, a section taken on substantially line 9 9 ofFig. 8, and n A Fig. 10,-,a detail section through'the cover of the binder upon which the fastening members are provided. v The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises covers 11 and 12, each of which is formed adjacent its inner edge with a hinge 13 to permit of ready swinging of the covers. The
a section taken on line 7 7 of l sheets or leaves 14- to be bound in the binder are arranged between the covers 11 and 12,
as clearly seen in the several views.
Provided adjacent the inner edge of the cover 11 are two spaced upwardly extend- Patented .time 7, i921.'
ing liexible fastening lmembers 15, formed preferably of metal, the inner ends thereof being united, if desired, sothat but a single piece of material will be employed, the fastening members 15 being constituted by the ends of the piece. Provided in thecover 12 A adjacent the inner edge thereof are two spaced openings 16, the saine being separated at such a distance as to adapt the same to receive the ends of the fastening members 15, as will be readily understood. The covers are locked together by bending back or clenching the upper or' outer ends of the members 15 after the latter have been'passed through the openings 16. Said ends of the members 15 are held in clenched condiedge of cover 12, said blade, when in operative relation with the fastening members,v assuming a position under the flange 19, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 4. The frictional engagement of said blade with the flange 19 will be sufficient to securely hold the same in position thereunder.
l Where the openings` y16are spaced a considerable distance apart, as seen in Fig.'6,
two blades 17 will be employed, one coperative with each of the fastening members 15,. said blades being adapted to assume positions under thelengthened flange 19 in pref cisely thev samev manner as described with reference to the construction Fi. 1.
lso, if desired, fastening members may disclosed in be in the form of'covered wires 15', lthe wires being cylindrical in form, and'thus less apt to cut the sheets :or leaves inserted into the binder. By employing `covered wires, that is, wire with an inclosing casing surrounding the same, inthe event of the wire itself breaking, through successive bending thereof, the casing will still be suflicient to holdV the fastening device together and operative, thus lengthening the life of thebinder, as will be readily understood.
` In the fastening ofthe sheets in the binder, the fastening devices are passed through openings provided in the inner edge portions of the sheets, as will be readily understood. rlhe sheets may be readily and easily perforated for this purpose prior to insertion of the same into the binder by simply inserting the inner edge of each sheet under the flange 19 and then puncturing the sheet at the opening 16 by means of a pencil or other suitable perforating tool. To guide the operator in thus perforating the sheet, the forward edge of the flange 19 is formed .with recesses or notches 2O which serve to indicate'the positions of the openings in the cover, as will be readily understood. In thus Vperforating the sheet, the same is placed'centrally upon the cover l2, and with the inner edge thereof resting under the ange 19, the cover 1l having been detached from the cover'12 and the blade 17 rocked to the position seen' in Fig. 2.
lVhile l have illustrated and described the preferred forms of'A construction for carrying my invention into edect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what 1V claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y L1A binder or iile for sheets of paper or the like, comprising a pair of covers; spaced flexible fastening means arising from one of said covers adjacent the inner edge thereof, andadapted to pass through openings provided in the other cover and be clenched over 4the latter; a flat blade on sail last mentioned cover, pivotally connected therewith, adapted tobe adjusted to engage over the clenched endsof said fastening means to hold the same in clenched condition; and a fiange onsaid last mentioned cover under which said blade is adapted to engage when in operative relation with said fastening means, said flange extending parallel with said blade'when the latter is in engagementv therewith and engaging with said blade throughout substantially its entire length, substantially as described.
2. A binder or file for sheets of paper or the like, comprising a pair of covers; spaced flexible fastening means arising from one of' said covers adjacent the inner edge thereof,
and adapted to pass through openings provided in the other cover and be clenched over the latter; a fiat blade on said last mentioned cover, pivotally connected therewith, adapted to be adjusted to engage over the clenched ends of said fastening means to hold the same in clenched condition; and a flange on said last mentionedcover projecting outwardly and forwardly from the inner edge of said last mentioned cover, under which said blade isu adapted to ,engage when in operative relation withl said' fastening means, substantially as described.y A
3. binder or file for' sheets of paper or the like, comprising-a pair of covers; spaced flexible fastening means arising fromoneof said covers adjacent the inner edge thereof, and adapted to pass through openings provided in the other cover and be clenched over the latter; a fiat blade on said last mentioned cover, pivotally connected therewith, adapted to be adjusted to engage over the clenched yends of said fastening means to hold the same in clenched condition; a
flange on said last mentioned cover project-"- ing outwardly and forwardly from the'inner edge of said last mentioned cover, under which said blade is adaptedto engage when in operative relation with said fastening means; and means on said flange adapted to indicate the position of said openings in said cover, substantiallyV as described? j v 4f. A binde-r or file for sheets of paper or the like, comprising a pair of coversf;1spaced flexible fastening means arising from one ofv said covers adjacent the inner edgeth'efreof, and adapted to pass through openings provided in the other* cover and be clenched over the latter; a flat'blade on said last mentioned cover, pivotall'y connected therewith, adapted to be adjusted to engage over the clenched ends of said fastening meansto hold thesame in clenched condition; a flange on said last mentioned cover projecting outwardly and forwardly from the linner edge of said last mentionedcover, under which said blade is adapted` to engage when in operative relation with said fastening means; and recesses in the forward edge of' said flange'adaptedl toindicate the position of said openings in said cover, substantially as described. Y 1 I 1n testimony whereof lhave signed ,my
name to'thi's specification-,in the presence of two-subscribing witnesses;
CHESTER VAN BUREN.'
