SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,436, dated June 9, 1903.

Application filed March 28, 1903. Serial No. 149,995. (No model.)

The object of the invention is to produce a hat-fastener adapted tobe employed in lieu of the ordinary hat-pin.

Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a hat-fastener which can be attached on the inside of a hat and having an arm for manipulating the fastener extending to the outside of the hat, said arm being pro vided with an ornamental end.

Furthermore,'the object of the invention is to produce a hat-fastener that can be easily and readily engaged and released at the will of the operator.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forthand claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a transverse section of a hat with the invention applied, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the fastening devices.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a plate having lugs 2 formed at right angles to the body and having apertures 3 near their ends. The plate has projections a at each corner formed integral with the body of the plate and by which the said plate may be attached to a hat or its lining or when the the hat-fastener is onlyattached temporarily to the hat by cutting small apertures in the sweat-band or hat and inserting the projections of the plate therethrough. It will also be observed that on the sides of the plate I provide a series of points 5, which improve the ornamental eifect of the plate and, if desired, may be used to secure the fastener to the hat. An arm 6 is journaled in the apertures of the lugs 2 and provided with aseries of teeth 7, approximately semicircular in shape, which are attached to the arm between the lugs and which are adapted to engage the side hair of the wearer of a hat. The outer end of the arm is bent at approximately right angles to the other portion and threaded. A setting-clamp 8, having a small hollow tube 9 and provided with a series of small fingers 10, in which a stone or ornament of any desired pattern may be secured.

In operation my improved hat-fastener is secured on the inner surface of the hat either to the body of the hat or to the sweat-band, and the arm impinges the hat and extends through to the outer surface of the hat, and when a hat provided with my device is placed on the head the arm is turned in a vertical position alongside of the outer surface of the hat, and by changing the arm from a vertical to a horizontal position the teeth are brought into engagement with the hair, and the arm lies close to the brim of the hat with the ornamental setting close to the outeredge of the rim, thereby producing a pleasing and ornamental effect. v I

With the foregoing description of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts it will be noted that various changes may be made in the proportions and details of construction without departing from the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the character described, a plate havingproj ections at each corner formed integral with the plate, lugs formed at right angles to the plate, an arm journaled in the lugs having its outer end bent at right angles to its other portion, teeth approximately semicircular in shape secured to the arm between the lugs, and means for securing the plate to a hat as and for the purpose described.
