PATENT OFFICE.
\VALTER BAKER FOWLER, OF LANVRENOE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOL-HOLDlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 729,319, dated May 26, 1903. Application filed December 27,1902. Serial No. 136,796. (No model.)
."0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER BAKER Fow- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Tool-HoldingDevices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved tool-holding device especially adapted for holding chisels, plane-bits, and other tools at the required angle with reference to a grindstone or other device when grinding or sharpening the tool to cause the same to be beveledto a cutting edge at one end and at a desired angle; andit consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, is very strong and durable, is thoroughly efficient in holding a tool while grinding or sharpening the, same, and which is adapted to hold the tool at any desired angle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool-holding device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the reverse side thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown I provide a frame 1, which is preferably a single casting comprising a table 2, having a plane upper side, a vertically-disposed side flange 3 at one side of the table and projecting from the surface thereof, brackets 4, which depend from said table near the sides thereof and nearer one end thereof than the other, and a web 5 under the table unitedthereto and united to and connecting the brackets 4 together, the said web having a central hub portion 6, which is provided with a screwthreaded bore adapted to be engaged by a clamping-screw, which may be employed to clamp a plane-bit or similar implement on the table when the plane-bit is provided with a longitudinal slot through which the said screw may extend. A roller 7 is disposed between the lower ends of the brackets 4 and is journaled on an axle 8, which connects the lower ends of the brackets together. I also provide a clamping-yoke 8, which is adapted to'be disposed transversely with reference to the table and has shoulders 9 on the inner sides of its depending arms 10, at the lower ends thereof, to engage the under side of the table at opposite sides thereof, and the said yoke is provided with a clamping-screw 11, which is adapted to bear on the upper side of a plane-bit, chisel, or other tool or thing to be ground or sharpened, as shown in Fig. 1 and also in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The said yoke, as willbe understood, is shiftable 1ongitudinally with reference to the table, and the function of the flange or rib 3 is to bear against one side of the bit or tool to dispose the same parallel with the table, so that its cutting edge when ground will be perpendicular to its side edges.
By reason of the brackets 4, which carry the roller, being out of the center of the table the tool or bit clamped on the table may be disposed at any appropriate angle with reference to the grindstone or oil-stone by projecting one end of the tool or bit from the appropriate end of the table.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the invention will be'readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Variouschanges in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of .thisinvention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A tool-holding device of the class described, comprising a table having a supporting-roller on its under side, whereby it may be inclined, and a yoke detachable from and longitudinally shiftable on said table, said yoke having means to clamp a tool or bit on said table, substantially as described.
2. A tool-holding device of the character described, comprising a table and side flange extending from its upper side, bracket-s depending from its lower side, a supportingroller carried by said brackets, and means to secure a tool or hit on said table, substantially as described.
3. In a tool-holding device of the character described, the combination of a table having a supporting-roller on its under side and a yoke longitudinally shiftable on and detachable from the table, said yoke having means to engage the sides of the table and being provided with means to clamp a tool or hit ro thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- WALTER BAKER FOWLER. Witnesses:
HARRY R. Dow, ANNA T. MULHOLLAND.
