A.TTACHING SHARPENING MEMBERS TO BODY MEMBERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
" Patented J an. 7, 1913.
Application filed May-9, 1912. Serial No. 696,179.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED 0. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Attaching Sharpening Members to Body Members; and I do declare the following to" be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains-to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening means and particularly to a means or methodfor fastening a sharpening member to the body member of pocket knives, the
object of the, invent-ion being to produce a knife which will carry a sharpening member as a part of the body of the knife, where- 'by the same may be detached from the body of the knife and used. as asharpener and then readily replaced again when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to .produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective, for the purposes for which it is designed. These objects, I accomplish by means of such structrue and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal. of the following specification and claim.
On the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in' the several views. Flgure 1 1s a rear elevation of a pocket lmife showing my improved attachment thereon.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with my improved attachment removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the under face of one of the sides of the knife showing my improved sharpening means thereon. Fi 4 is a sectional view taken on a line X- of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on a line YY of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawmgs, thenumeral 1 designates the body of the knife and 2 the sides of the body which in my improved structure are provided with recesses 3' ineach' end adapted to receive spring clip buttons 4 disposed on each end of each side of the knife, whereby said sides 2 may be readily removed. In said sides 2 on theunder face thereof, I provide recesses or slots 5 into which I insert members 6, such members being carborundum or similar abrasive or sharpening material. These members 6 are glued or otherwise fastened to the sides 2 in position in the slots or recesses 5 adding strength andv stability. Thus in practice when it is desired to sharpen the knife, either one ofthe sides 2 may be readily detached from the spring buttons 4 and the blade of the knife moved over the surface of the While I have shown a particular form for fastening the sides 2 to the body 1, 1n practice any form of fastener found most desirable may be used.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced 'such a device as. substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, in practice such deviations from such detail may bev resorted to as do not form a departure invention. a Having thus described my invention what from the spirit of the- I claim as new and useful and desire to secure-by Letters Patent is: j
A device as described comprising a body member, a pair of spaced resilient buttons on each side of said body "member, side members provided with recesses adapted to receive said buttons, said side members being provlded' with grooves in their under sides,
and an abrasive member secured in each of said side members, as described.
. In testimony whereofI aflix my signature inpresence of two witnesses. D
. FRED C. ROSS.
