Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed January 7, 1916. Serial No. 70,831.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssEJ. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knives and more particularly to a cutting guard therefor.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character whereby means are provided for detachably connecting the cutting guard to the blade of the knife which permits the knives of high grade silver and the like being prevented from having to be sharpened which in time wears the silver plating of the knife and mutilates and mars the appearance of the blade by leaving the same bare.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character wherein an attachment clip is formed contiguous with one terminal of the cutting guard and is adapted to embrace the connecting portion of the knife blade with its handle for retaining the cutting guard upon one edge of the knife and permitting of such attachment being readily removed and applied as the occasion may so demand.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fullS set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing .and pointed out in the appended. claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knife with my improved attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment removed from the knife; Fig. 3 is an end view of the attachment showing the means for attaching the cutting guard to the knife; .and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the cutting guard.
Referring more specifically to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in I the several views, 5 denotes a knife blade provided with a handle 6 and a reduced connecting portion 7 for connecting the blade 5 with said handle 6. For the purpose of illustrating the use of my invention I have shown the same as applied to an ordinary table knife but it is to be understood that the same may be attached to any form of knives as found desirable, such as butcher knives, razors, and the like.
My improvement resides in a cutting guard 8 which is preferably constructed of well tempered steel and the like and is constructed of an integral piece of steel comprising upwardly diverging side members 9, the space formed by the opposite diverging side members presenting a blade receiving recess 10 which is of substantially V- shape in cross section of the diverging side members 9 gradually merging in a sharpened cutting edge 11. The forward end 12 of the cutting guard 8 is curved on the arc of a circle for the purpose of embracing theforward end 18 of the blade and presenting the forward end of the blade with a cutting edge 14. The opposite'or rear end of the cutting attachment is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined portion 15 terminally provided with an upstanding resilient clip 16,-the purpose of suchclip being to yield ingly engage with and around the reduced connecting portion 7 of the knife for retaining the cutting attachment to one .of the longitudinal edges of the forward edge of its blade 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. It is, of course, to be understood that even though this cutting guard is constructed from highly tempered steel, it will have a certain amount of resiliency to permit of the same frictionally engaging with the opposite sides and front portion of the knife in order that it may assist the clip 16 in establishing a firm and tight connection of the cutting guard with such knife, and it is to be further understood that even and the lower portions though I have shown this attached to only ent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider tobe the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
I claim:
.1. A device of the class described comprising a knife embodying a blade and a handle portion thereof, and a reduced connecting portion connecting the blade with such handle portion, and a cutting guard for said blade provided with a resilient clip adapted to embrace the reduced connecting portion of the knife and handle for retaining the cutting guard in applied position. 2. In combination with a knife including a blade, of a cutting guard for said blade, and means formed contiguous with one terminal of the cutting guard for detachably and reversibly connecting the cutting guard with said blade.
3. In combination with a knife including a blade, of a cutting guard for said blade, and a clip formed contiguous with one terminal of the cutting guard for detachably and reversibly connecting the cutting guard with said blade.
4C. In combination with a knife including a blade, of a cutting guard for said blade, and resilient means formed contiguous with one terminal of the cutting guard for detachably and reversibly connecting the cutting guard with said blade.
5. As a new article of manufacture,a cutting guard for knife blades embodying mg side members, the diverging side members presenting a blade receiving slot, and means formed contiguous with one terminal of the cutting guard for permitting of a detachable and reversible connection of said cutting guard to the blade of said knife.
6. In combination with a knife embodying a blade of a cutting guard for said blade, and resilient means formed contiguous with one end of said cutting guard for permitting of a detachable and reversible connection of the cutting guard with the opposite longitudinal edges of the knife blade and also to the forward end of said blade.
'7'. In combination with a knife embodying a blade, of a cutting guard for said blade, said guard being provided at its forward end with a curved portion, and means formed contiguous with the opposite ter minal of the cutting guard for detachably and reversibly connecting the guard to the opposite longitudinal edges of the knife blade and also securing the curved portion of the cutting guard to the forward end of the knife.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE J. MITCHELL.
