IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH AND CANE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,070, dated March 6, 1877; application filed December 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER PICKERING, of Needham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brush and Cane Cut ter, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved instrument for cutting bushes, cane, and corn, which shall be simple in construction, strong, durable, and effective.
The invention consists in the ferrule provided with the three hooks, the pivoted button, and the bolt, in combination with the handle, to receive and hold the shank of the cutter, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the handle, which is made of convenient length and size, and gradually increases in size toward its lower end. B is the ferrule, which is slipped upon the handle A from its upper end, so that it cannot slip or be drawn off said handle. Upon the lower side of the ferrule B. is formed a flat plate or surface, upon the upper edge of which are formed two hooks, b to hook upon the upper edge of the shank of the blade or cutter C, and upon the forward part of its lower edge is formed a hook, b to hook upon the lower edge of the said shank. The rear end of the cutter-shank is held up against the rear hook b by a button, b ,..which is pivoted to the rear lower corner of the flat surface of the ferrule B. The button I) and the rear end of the cuttershank are fastened in place by a cross-head bolt, b, which passes through notches in the adjacent edges of the said button and shank, and through the rearwardly-projecting part of the said plate, and is secured in place by a nut screwed upon it.
By this construction the cutter C will be held securely in place while in use, and may be readily detached by removing the bolt b. To the rear side of the upper end of the handie A is attached a metal hook, D, which is so formed as to receive and fit easily upon the hand of the person using the instrument, and thus prevent the said handle from slipping out of the said hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The ferrule B, provided with the books 12 b b the pivoted button t and the bolt 1), in combination with the handle A, to receive and hold the shank of the cutter C, substantially as herein shown and described.
