PATENT OFFICE.
-ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 727,946, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed March 20 1902. Serial Noi 99,120. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. HERMANSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Superior, in the county of Douglas and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope-Clamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to rope-clamps; andit consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and defined in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the ropeclamp, showing the mo vablej aw partlyin section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rope-clamp. Fig. 3 is a section upon the line m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4. is a perspective detail view of the cam for locking the movable jaw.
Engaging the woodwork l is the screwshank 2, upon which is mounted the head 3, this head being cut away so as to form a shoulder 4 at right angles to the large fiat surface upon which the movable parts are mounted. The base 5 is integral with the head 3. At the lower end of the smooth surface 4 are the teeth 6, the two parts together constituting a stationary jaw. A boss 7 is rigidly mounted upon the flat surface of the head. Upon the pivot 8 is eccentrically mounted the movable jaw 9,which is provided with a smooth channeled surface 10 and also with teeth 11. Upon the pivotl2 is mounted a thumb-cam 13, provided with a rotund portion 14: and with a handle 15, said lever operating as a cam and being free to engage the movable jaw. This lever is provided with a shoulder 16 for engaging the outer circumferential surface of the head and with a pivothole 17 for engaging the pivot 12. The rope direction.
is shown at 18 and is represented as being gripped between the fixed and movable jaws.
The operation of my device is as follows: The rope 18 being in the position indicated in Fig. 1 is normally free to move downwardly and to the left, but not in the opposite The leastmovement upward and to the right causes the rope to bear upon the channeled surface 10, thus forcing the teeth 11 ofthe movable jaw toward the teeth 6 of the stationary jaw and firmly securing the rope. By means of the handle the rotund portion 14 of the cam can be forced into engagement with the upper end of the movable jaw 9, thereby causing the teeth 11 to move asunder from the teeth 6, thus releasing the rope. The teeth grip the rope automatically as soon as the handle 15 is released.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 A rope-clamp, comprising a head provided with means for securing the same upon a stationary object and also provided with teeth for engaging a rope, a movable jaw pivoted intermediate of its ends upon said head and provided upon one of its ends with teeth disposed opposite said teeth of said head, said jaw being provided upon its other end and upon the greater portion of its length with a central channel forengaging a rope, a thumbcam pivoted upon said head and provided with a rotund surface engaging said jaw for the purpose of releasing the teeth thereof from engagement with said rope.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. HERMANSON.
