SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,351, dated November 1, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. AMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a full,clear,-and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a vise which is provided with detachable jaws; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Fig. VII is a similar View to Fig. VI, showing the visejaws closed and the bifurcated shanks at one side of the jaws broken away.

1 designates the fixed stem of the implement, which at one end is provided with a neck 2 and a ball 3. The ball 3 is seated in the socket 4, contained by a base 5, the ball being held in the socket by a cap 6, securely fastened. This arrangement provides a universal ball-and-socket joint between the stem 1 and the base 5 for the purpose of permitting the stem to be maintained in an upright position regardless of whether the foundation on which the base is seated is level or otherwise. The opposite end of the stem 1 is provided with openings 1, extending therethrough, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.

7 designates a double ratchet-bar joined at one end by a sleeve 8, that surrounds the stem 1, and is adapted to slide with the ratchetbar thereon. The opposite or outer end of the ratchet-bar is joined by a head 9, having prongs 10 and cut-away portions providing side recesses 11.

12 designates a hand-lever pivoted at 13 to the fixed stem 1. The lever is forked t0 straddle the ratchet-bar 7, and the stem, with its inner end, extends beyond the pivot.

14. are gripping-loops pivoted to the lever 12 at each side of the pivot of the lever. These loops are designed to engage the teeth of the ratchet-bar 7, and they are provided with arms 15, that may be grasped by the 0perators fingers to throw the loops out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth when they are relieved from strainand it is desired to lower the ratchet-bar on the stem.

16 designates a prong on the stem 1, that is designed to be placed against a post A or other suitable object to receive the strain of wire in the stretching operation. The point of the prong 16 is intended to bite into the post A to prevent the stretcher from slipping from the post. On the sleeve is a boss 17 and a cam-lever 18.

19 is a stop on the sleeve 8, adapted to limit the movement of the cam-lever. In stretching wire the wire indicated by B is inserted between the boss 17 and the cam-lever 18, and the cam-lever is turned to clamp the wire between these parts.

A pair of jaws 20 is applied to the stem. The shanks 21 of the jaws are bifurcated to straddle the central portion 11 of the head 9 at the ends of the ratchet-bar. The jaws 20 are detachably connected to the stem 1 by pins 22, passing through the jaw-shanks, the pins being inserted in the openings 1", contained by the stem. In the upward movement of the ratchet-bar 7 the jaws 20 are forced toward each other in the head 9, moving from the position shown in Fig. VI to that shown in Fig. VII. By detachably connecting the vise-jaws to the stem 1 they may be readily removed, when the device may be used as a hoisting-jack or wire-stretcher.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

The combination of a stem,a double ratchetbar movable on said stem, means for moving saidratchet-bar,ahead carried by said ratchetbar and having cut-away portions, and a pair of vise-jaws adapted to fit said cut-away portions and detachably connected to said stem; substantially as described.
