Ni rn'rns PATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY HESTON BELKNAP, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES S. HIRST, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,531, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed Jnly 29, 1902. Serial No. 117,547. (No model) To (LZZ whom, it 77'I/ft 7/ concern: A
Be it known that I, HENRY HESTON BEL- KNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, and more particularly to those made of paper or pasteboard.
In some boxes for containing cereal foods instructions are given on the wrapper to out a slit along an indicated line near the top of one of the long sides of the box, and by pressing inwardly on the narrow sides of the box the weight of the grain willcause the broad side below the slit to bulge and emit the grain. WVhen pressure is released, the box when first so used will resume its normal position, but after using several times the broad side will become sprung outward, thus making an entrance for dust and vermin.
The object of myinvention is to remedy this evil by providing a reinforcing-tongue at the top of the box with its end extending below the slit, so that when it is desired to close the box it will be necessary only to push the broad side below the slit in until the tongue falls into place in front, when the resilience of the lower part will return it to its normal position, the tongue, however, preventing it from going any farther.
The advantages of my invention will more fully appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a form of blank from which my box may be made; Fig. 2, a View of the upper part of a box to which my invention is applied; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the box opened to pour out the contents; Fig. 4, a view in section showing the position when in act of closing the box, and Fig. 5 a view of box when closed.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicatecorresponding parts throughout the several views, A represents a box made according to my invention, having the front B, the sides 0, and top D.
E represents the line on which the box is cut when it is desired to get at the contents.
F represents a tongue formed on the reinforcing top plate G, the end of said tongue being of sufficient length to insure that its lower end projects slightly below the line E.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The box is sold intact, as shown in Fig. 2. On the label covering the box is a line E to indicate where the box is to be cut to get at its contents. When the slit is out along line E, the sides 0 should be pressed in, causing the front B, below the slit, to bulge and permit egress of the contents of the box. When it is desired to closethe box, the front 13 is pressed inwardly until beyond the line of tongue F, which drops in place in front of 13 and holds it from bulging toward the front, as would otherwise be the case and the box form a harbor for vermin and receptacle for dust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A box adapted to be opened by cutting a slit therein, and a tongue inside the box at one side of the slit and adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the part of the box at the other side of the slit, substantially as shown and described.
2. A box adapted to be opened by cutting a slit therein in close proximity to its top, and a tongue behind the part of the box above said slit and adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the part of the box at the 8o lower side of the slit, substantially as shown and described.
3. A box adapted to be opened by cutting a transverse slit across one of its broad sides adjacent to the top, and a tongue behind the part of the broad side above said slit and adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the part of the box below said slit, substantially as shown and described.
4. A paper box having its top made up of a double layer of material, a tongue depending from the inner layer of material against one of the sides of the box, said box adapted to be openedby cutting a transverse slit above the lower edge of said tongue, said tongue being adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the side of the box below said slit to prevent said side of the box bulging, substantiallyas shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
HENRY HESTON BELKNAP.
