'MATOi-if-BOX HOLDER.
SPECIFICATLLON forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,306, dated May 5, 1903. iippiiciiiioii nei December i2, 1902. sein No. 134.880. (no model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH J. DE LONG, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-BOX Holders, of which the followin gis a specification.
My invention relates especially to the construction and arrangement of devices employed for holding matches, both in a complete and partially-burned condition, and has for its object the provision of a simple and eective match-box holder and covered re ceptacle for partiallyeconsumed matches, cigarette and cigar stubs, and the like.
To attain the desired end, myinvention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a match box or holder, of a base therefor constituting a waste-receptacle provided with a tiltable cover and means for automatically' returning such cover to a horizontal position after tilting, all of which will be hereinafter iirst fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved match-box holder. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. S'is a vertical sectional view at line .frac of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a like view at line a d of the same figure.
Similar numerals of reference whereverthey occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
lis a body or base forming a receptacle, made of metal or any other preferred material. 2 is the bottom of the'receptacle.
3 is a top, cover, or platform provided with a block 4 or the equivalent, designed to re'- ceive and hold in place a match-box. l
5 is a weight secured to the under side of the top 3, said top being removably-supported upon trunnions 6, which rest upon seats 7, projecting within the base l.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, the Operation of my device is as follows: A matchmanner.
box being mounted upon the cover 2, the matches may be removed therefrom and scratched upon the side of the box in the usual By applying the hand to the box the cover may be tilted to one side, leaving an opening for the dropping of the unconsumed portion of the match, cigarette, or cigar to the interior of the body of the device beneath the cover, and'when the hand is removed the boX and cover automatically return to their initial position. I thus provide not only a convenient and'ornamental holder for a match-box or matches, but also a completely-inclosed receptacle for unsightly and disagreeable partiallyconsumed matches, cig arettes, and cigars. The receptacle can be easily emptied by simply lifting off the cover.
Ihave shown a weight as applied to the cover to cause it to automatically maintain a horizontal position; but it is obvious that a spring might be substituted therefor to accomplish the same result without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I claimas new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' l. The combination with a hollow supporting-base, of a match-box holder; a tiltable cover for said base, and means vfor automatically returning said cover to a horizontal position when tilted.
2. The combination with a hollow supporting-base, of a match-box holder; a removable, tiltable cover lfor said base, and means for automatically returning said cover to a horizontal position, when tilted.
3. The combination with a hollow base, of a tiltable, automatically recovering cover therefor, and a support for a match-box m'ounted upon said cover. Y
Signed by me at New York this' 11th day-of December, 1902.
JOS. J. DE LONG. Witnesses:
