TOALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN v v Be it known that I, CHARLES. F. YoLLM nn, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Extension Bed-Lounge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description oh the nature thereof, snfiieicnt to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevationof the deviceillustrating my invention.

My invention has for its object a lounge, which can be readily extended and formed into a bed. It consists of several new and useful devices, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings, A represents a lounge, consisting of the seat a, back 6, and head or arm-rest 0. These parts rest on a base, B, having feet or legs, d. The seat, back, and rest are constructed, as ordinarily, of suit able framework, and may be upholstered plain, tufted, or quilted, and with or without springs, as desired. The framework of the seat a is hinged to the base B by suitable hinges, 6, so that the lounge can be readily swung ofi' from the base. The base, B, consists of an open frame, of quadrilateral form, or of form to correspond to that of the lounge. The'bottom has secured to it a series of webbing, tapes, or strips, of suitable material,

which cross each other and form a sort of net-work, a. The base forms a chamber or open space, 0, which receives an extension-mattress, bed, or seat, D. This extension-part1) consists of a framework, D, to c0rrc-- spond in shape or form with-the base, B, and may be upholstered similarly to the parts a t 0. Suitable hinges, E, connect the extension-partD and the base B, the butts of which being secured to the under side of the extension-part and the upper side of the base, B, opposite to the hinges 2, between the base and seata. The extension-part should fit nicely in the base, and be flush with the top thereof. It will readily swing out of the base-chamber, and in a direction opposite to that of the parts a b c. F are legs pivoted to one side of the bottom of the frame D of the extension-part D, and drop into recesses fin the said bottom. When the extension D is swung out of its chamber 0, the legsh swing from the recesses f, and support said part D, but when returned to the chamber, then the legs drop into the recesses and are out of the way. G represents a separate pillow, head, or arm-rest,'cprresponding in shape with the part c of the lounge A. It has toes, it, which enter openingsor sockets in theiread-end of the extension-part D, and thus form a eontinnation of the head or armrest 0. These toes support the pillow inplace, which may he assistedby latches, hooks, eyes bolts, or any other suitable fastenings, placed on the lower side of the framework of the pillow and the head of the extension D. When the part G is not wanted on the extension, it lies on the head orarm-rest a, and acts as an auxiliary or separate pillow.. I

The lounge-bedstead, as now arranged, can be readily made to assume its first form by the above opera tions in reverse order. Remove rest G, swing back the part a b 0, turn the mattress or bed D into chamber C,

and return the part2: c on 'the base B. Thercst G can then be placed on the rest 0, or elsewhere, as may be desired. The extension-part D, when entirely swung out of its chamber, will have its top of the same level as the seat a, and thus form a continuation thereof. The'back, b, may also be hinged, so as to be let down in line with the seat a. This willfurther increase the size of the bed. The hollow base, B, or chamber 0, will be made large enough to receive all spreads, quilts, blankets, &c., necessary for the bed. They will lie on the webbing or net-work, or some of them may be placed between the top part, a b c, and the extension B, when the latter is in thechamber 0. i a

It will he noticed that when the lounge is in position, as shown in fig. 1, it has the appearance of an ordinary lounge. The extension-part D is entirely concealed, yet is readily accessible. ,7

The simplicity and utility of my invention are apparent. The device can be quickly and. cheaply con-- structed. An ordinary lounge or sofa, of the form now in use, can readily be converted into a bedstead,

constructed according to my invention, bymerely sawing oil the legs or feet and then hinging the frame of the remaining part to the hollow base having the extension-part hinged thereto. The head or arm-rest will act as a pillow, and the back will he serviceable in preventing the person from rolling 011' of the seat, inasmuch as the upholstering thereof is generally elliptical or semicircular on its uppersurface. The pillow G- and arm-rest 0 form a head-board, either as a pillowitself, or for preventing an ordinary feather or other pillow, if used, from being slipped ofi' from the bed.

Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved extension-lounge, formed by the combination of the following parts: An ordinary top, consisting of a seat, a, arm-rest c, and back 6, firmly secured to ca h other; the extension D, the extension arm-rest or pillow G,the base, 13, having bottom a and the automatic closing and opening legs F, all as herein described. l l

2. The combination of top, a b 0, base, 13, extension D, legs f, and pillow G,;'substantia1ly as and for the purpose described.
