To all, whom, it may concern:

Beit known thatLMELANoTHoN H. FETZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Thin-Rim Sweat- Pads, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which--- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sweat-pad. Fig. 2 is a'plan view of the pad extended. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of one side of the pad indicated by theline III III of Fig. 1 and showing the position of the collar in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a modified construction of the thin rim. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view showing a modified con struction of the front rim.

My invention relates to improvements in sweat-pads for horses, adapted to be used over'the neck and shoulders of-the animal all around underneath the collar in the usual manner, the object being to provide a cushion under the collar at all points around the neck. Ordinarily such pads are made of stuffed material of a uniform thickness from the front to the back edges and for the full length and are provided with clips secured upon the outer sides near the front to en-' gage and hold the collar in position. That portion of the pad extending in front ofthe collar and to which such clips are secured, being of considerable thickness and usually stulfed with hair or other resilient material, is entirely superfluous as a cushion, being entirely forward of the bearing portion of the collar, and is apt to confine and chafe the neck, while being very hot and uncomfortable in warm weather.

My invention is designed to provide a pad which shall have the same amount of necessary cushioning substance required to provide a soft resilient bearing underneath the collar, with a forward portion adapted to extend underneath and beyond that portion of the collar upon which the pressure from the harness is exerted, and to which forwardlyextending portion the collar-retaining clips are secured. tion constitutes a thin rim of greatly-reduced thickness, giving greater room, ease, and comfort, preventing chafing or heating, and yet capable of performing all the necessary functions required of the ordinary forward portion ofthe pad.

Referring now to the drawings, the main body portion of the pad is composed of an inner and outer covering 2 3, of canvas, duck, or enamel muslin cloth or other suitable material, of a form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, adapted to embrace and fit the neck, between which sides is inclosed the filling or stuffing 4 of hair, jute, or other suitable substance, the sides being quilted together, as indicated at 5. The front edge or thin rim extends forwardly of the main body portion of the pad, as clearly shown, and consists of a separate thin strip or piece 6 of felt, duck cloth, leather, or other suitable material, secured by stitching to or between thesides or otherwise to the main body portion. The sides 2 3 may also be extended forwardly of the main body portion of the pad, as indicated at 2' 3, Figs. 4 and 5, and stitched together at the front edge, or a separate reinforcing doubled strip 7 may be inserted and stitched or otherwise secured between the extended edges, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In these latter constructions the edges are merely extended forward for the required distance without any intervening cushioning substance, or, if desired, a very slight amount of the filling 4 may be stitched in between them to provide a stiffening-body.

To the forwardly-extending thin rim as made in either manner as just described are secured the collar-securing clips 8, of usual form, adapted to hold the pad and collar in proper relation to each other.

As thus constructed my improved sweatpad provides a very efficient, comfortable, and desirable article for the objects in view, obviating the objections incident to the usnal forms of pads heretofore in use. It is simple and economical in construction and will commend itself to all those who are familiar with this class of articles.

Changes and variations may be made in the shape, construction, or material employed by the skilled mechanic; but all such changes are designed to be included as within the scope of the following claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A sweat-pad for horses consisting of an elongated double-sided cushioning portion adapted to embrace and conform to and to provide a collar-bearing around the neck of the animal, and provided With a forwardlyextending thin edge, with fastening means attached thereto and adapted to engage the front portion of the collar, substantially as set forth.

2. A sweat-pad for horses consisting of an elongated double-sided cushioning portion adapted to embrace and conform to and to provide a collar-bearing around the neck of the animal, and provided With a forwardlyextending thin edge adapted to project under the front portion of the collar, with securingclips secured to the thin edge and adapted to I engage said front portion of the collar, substantially as set forth.

3. A sweat-pad consisting of a cushioning portion adapted to provide a bearing for the collar, and a thin edge extending beyond such cushioning portion consisting of a separate strip of material secured to the cushioning portion, substantially as set forth.

4. A sweat-pad consisting of a cushioning portion adapted to provide a bearing for the collar and a thin edge extending beyond such cushioning portion, consisting of a separate strip of material secured to the cushioning portion, with fastening-clips secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
