SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4=45,069, dated January 20, 1891 Application filed September 23, 1389. Serial No. 324,785. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. CHRISTOPHER MOLLEN- COFF, of Malta, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a particular construction in horse-collars provided with a covering of felt on the inner portion thereof where the collar comes in contact with the horse with a view to the absorption of the perspiration and the consequent lessening of discomfort and chafing.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my improvement, Figure 1 is a transverse section of one side of a collar containing my Improvement. Fig.2 illustrates in plan view the two unequal bodies of felt which enter into the composition of the collar, laid one upon the other, with the margin of one inside that of the other, in order to give the proper form of seam at the junction of the felt and leather along the outer margin of the collar.

A in Fig. 1 represents the body of the collar, and B the roll. The body isinclosed between an outer layer of leather (1 and an inner double layer of felt a a the outer of said sheets of felt a being directly in contact with the shoulders of the horse. The two sheets of felt a and a are cut of unequal size, as indicated in Fig. 2, one being narrower than the other and terminating on its outer or convex edge at a distance from the corresponding edge of the sheet or layer a These two layers a a of felt will commonly be stitched together or otherwise connected more or less permanently near the the outer edge of the inner sheet, as indicated by the rows of stitching s, so that the double body of felt presents only the thickness of one sheet at its outer curved edge. This edge is sewed with the leather layer a, forming an inseam, as clearly shown in Fig. 1,the single layer of fe1t.which is of the usual commercial thickness, being bent about equally with the leather to which it is sewed, so as to give a neat external appearance, much the same as though two thicknesses of leather or of felt were similarly sewed.

The opposite or inner edges of the sheets a a are folded against the corresponding edge of the leather piece a and inclosed be tween the edges of the leather covering of the roll B in the usual manner.

The filling of the pad and roll presents nothing new, except as the inner body or sheet of felt a may be regarded as a part of the filling.

The collar described, provided with the double thickness of felt on the face toward the shoulders of the horse, is found to present a sufficient body of that absorbent material to eliectively take up the sweat or moisture resulting from working the horse in the collar, which a single sheet of commercial felt will not do. The double thickness of felt being sufficient for the purpose stated, a greater thickness is unnecessary, and an ordinary and less expensive filling C may be employed.

A collar thus constructed has all the merit that can be obtained by the use of felt as an absorbent without the cost attending the construction of the entire pad of felt, as was proposed in a prior patent, No. 393,251, granted to me November 20, 1888.

I claim as my invention- The horse-collar described, having the body or pad composed of the two layers of felt a a of unequal width, of which the outer layer a projects at its outer edge beyond the corresponding edge of the inner layer,and a sheet of leather or other suitable material a, having its outer edge stitched to the projecting edge of said outer layer, and a central filling C, substantially as described.
