PAD FOR HORSE-COLLARS.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 226,887, dated April 27, 1880. Application filed June 4, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. SNYDER, of Five Corners, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pads for Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to the manufacture of pads for horse-collars.

I am not aware of any collar-pad, prior to my invention, composed of inner and outer perforated leather coverings of different rigidity, capable of being washed and kept clean, and a filling of loose curled hair; hence my improvement.

The collar-pads now used, have a tendency to hold the perspiration'from the horse, owing to the impossibility of ventilation, thereby becoming hard and worthless in a short time and causing sore shoulders. Also, saddlecloths have been made of three parts-to wit, a felt covering composing the inner and outer surfaces, which are perforated, and an intermediate filling of curled hair. This construction of a saddle-cloth involving the use of felt is not suited for collar-pads, as it is too warm. and causes the shoulders to sweat unnecessarily, and it cannot be washed by cleansing applications to the surface of the pad.

The ob'iect of my invention is to overcome these se. .ous difficulties and prevent the animals shoulders from being overheated and chafed, and afford increased coolness.

In the annexed drawings, forming apart of this spe'fication, the letter A represents a hOI'SG-Ct .tr having the pads B attached thereto on op :site sides.

The pad B is composed of the buckskin piece 0 or other soft similar material, leather covering D, and the curled-hair fillingE, as shown fully in Fig. 3.

The pieces Q and D are of the shape substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to conform to the shape and size of an ordinary horse-collar belly, and the edges orborders thereof are sewed or otherwise firmly secured together. These pieces are provided with a plurality of small perforations, Z), which admit air to the interior of the pad and to the horses skin and keep it cool. The inner piece, 0, being made of soft material, avoids irritation of'the shoulders by rubbing, and the outer piece, D is made of stronger and more rigid material, in order that the wear of the collar may not tear or otherwise destroy it.

The pad, being composed of the buckskin and leather covering, can be washed daily without injury to the pad or its filling, and the clean buckskin, being next to the horses shoulders, willhave the desired tendency to keep them cool and prevent chafing.

The curled hair is a good absorbent, and is not liable to decay and shift under the collar,

and will retain its elasticity and preserve the normal shape of the pad.

The pads are attached to the horse-collar by lacing, or they may be attached in any other suitable manner.

As an improved article of manufacture, the horse-collar pad consisting of the inner perfo-v rated piece made of buckskin, the outer perforated piece made of leather of a different rigidity, and the loose curled-hair filling, as shown and described.
