Description

M. T URLEY. Horse-Collars Patented Mar. 2, 1880 ATTORNEYS NJPHERS. PVlOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D10.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MARSHALL TURLEY, oncooncin BLUFFS, IOWA.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,200, dated March 2, 1880.
Application filed August 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL TURLEY, of Council Bluffs, in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to horse-collarsyand it consists in the construction of the pads for the top and sides of the collar, .as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a horse-collar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the top pad.
A represents the pad at the top of the collar, which pad contains within it two elastic tubes or pieces, B B, so arranged as to have a bearing one on each side of the-neck of the horse, to prevent the weight or friction coming direct on the center of the neck. These elastic pieces relieve the neck from the blow or switching of the tongue and prevent the neck from getting sore.
The under side of the pad A is made of sheepskin 0 with the wool on, so that the wool will be next to the horses neck.
D represents one of the side pads of the collar, which is also made of sheep-skin with the wool on, and the wool next to the horses flesh.
The advantage of having the wool next to the flesh is, that it absorbs the perspiration and never gets wet and fiabbylike other pads. It can be washed and combed and made as good as new.
Any kind of medicine-as alum, lime, or any astringent-foam be put on the wool, which will hold the medicine, and thus old sores may be cured and the shoulders prevented from becoming sore.
Only two tubes are necessary, pressing one on each side of the neck, leaving a groove or hollow between them to relieve the crest of the neck, while the tubes themselves bear only on the points where the greatest strength is.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- As an improved article of manufacture, a horse-collar pad having two longitudinal elastic tubes, one on each side, to form a bearing, for the purposes set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I' have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of August, 1879.
MARSHALL TURLEY.
