E. L. MGCLAIN. HARNESS PAD.
Patented May 24,1898.
A llivrrnn `Farnnr Ormea@ EDWARD L. MCOLAIN, OF GREENFIELD, OHIO.
HARNESSDPAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,567, dated May 24, 1898.
Application iiledune 25, 1896. Serial No. 596,871. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. MCOLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padded Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which i'orm a part of this specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements applicable to all padded devices used with various parts of harness attachments to prevent draft-animals being injured by direct contact with hard stiff leather, die.
The principal feature of my present improvements consists in dividing these pads into two separate receptacles or pockets by means of a flexible waterproof diaphragm and then iillin g these pockets with dissimilar stuft'- ings, a cheap padding being inserted in the outer pocket, while a relatively higher-priced absorbent article is used for iilling the inner pocket, as hereinafter more fully described; but this idea may be elaborated by using a water-absorbent material for the inner filling and separating' it from the outer filling by means of a waterproof iiexible diaphragm, said outer lling being composed of any suitable material or materials, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a transverse section of an unfilled pad embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is another section of said pad, but showing it filled with dissimilar stufflngs. Fig. 3 is an elaboration of the invention. Fig. l is a modification of the pad.
Fig. 1 represents any form of pad capable of being used with a harness or any attachment to the same, the pad being composed of a casing or jacket A, so divided by a flexible waterproof diaphragm B as to afford a pair of separate and distinct receptacles or pockets O D, the latter being stuffed with suitable fillings F. F. inner pocket O may be made of relatively dearer material than that F of the outer pocket, and after said pockets are thus padded rovings G are run through the device to give the casing a tufted or quilted shape. W'ith certain kinds of pads it may be desirable to use small pieces of sponge for this inner absorbent filling E. This construction of pad permits the inner filling to be dampened and rendered flexible and soft after becoming hard by the absorption of sweat from a draft-animal, while the diaphragm B prevents the outer filling F being saturated with water during this enlivening process.
In the elaboration of my invention seen in Fig'. 3 two waterproof diaphragrns BB" are used with a cheap iilling F between them and relatively dearer absorbent llings E" E on the outside of said diaphragnis; but in another form of the pad (seen in Fig. i) the casing d and waterproof diaphragm h are secured to a stiff back II, the iillings c f being of any suitable material or materials, provided the iilling c is absorbent.
In this specification the expression inner absorbent filling"7 is to be understood as designating thestufng applied to that part or side of a pad that comes in contact with a draft-animal, while the expression outer filling describes the cushioning material in that side or division of a pad bearing against any part of a harness or attachment to the same.
I claim as my invention- A pad for application to animals, which pad contains a flexible waterproof diaphragm; an absorbent filling' on one side of the latter; and a dissimilar filling on its opposite side,I for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDIVARD L. MCCLAIN. Witnesses:
JAMES H. LAYMA'N, HARRY WERNKE.
