Be it known that I, J AMES ZERA BENEDICT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Oneida, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements inPulley-Blocks; and I do hereby declare thatqthe following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters of `reference marked thereon.
The present invention hasfor its object to provide a simple and effectivepulley-block that is capable of use for all purposes to which an article of this character may be found serviceable and that will possess strength and durability; and itconsists in a pulley- `block constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings,A B` represent the two outer side plates of the pulleyblock, and C the center plate, the two outer plates ,having attheir upper and lower ends, respectively, suitable extensions ct, which are bent inwardly at a rightangle and 'terminate y in {ianges b. respectively, said hangers extending betweenl the flanges b of the side plates and connected together by suitable fastenings e. Between the three plates of the pulley-block are located the pulleys D, (shown in dotted and full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively,) a
suitable shaft f extending through the plates and pulleys. These plates above described,
with their extensions, flanges, and the perforated hangers, may be variously modified or changed in construction without in any manner aecting the essential features of the invention, the plates being of any form found best adapted to the purpose, as may also the pulleys connected thereto. 4

being connected to the hanger by a staple g orjby anyother suitable means found most The jaws EF of the clamp conf sist A,of two right-angle plates, one of said jaws being adjustably connected to its opposite jaw by-any suitable means found best adapted to the purpose, and in the present instance is shown an elongated slot t' in the jaw F, said jaw overlapping the jaw E and a bolt extending up through the two overlapped ends of the jaws and through the elongated slot and a screw-nut j engaging the end of the bolt. This is one of many Vmeans that may be employed for adjustably i hooks, and other like fastenings, which would require the permanent attachment of such fastenings to the joist or beam, the clamp `which embraces the joist orbeamenabling said clamp to be moved along the same to any point required for use, this beingheld as a decided advantage, as the joist or beam is notin any way weakenedV by driving holes therein to engage the hook or' other like fastening.
Between the plates B C of the pulley-block is a pivoted brake-shoe G of any suitable construction, the pivot-pin k, which supports the brake shoe, extending therethrough and through the plates, said brake-shoe having rigidly connected to it a depending lever H, with 'loop or eye Z, through which the hoisting-rope I extends and by which the lever and brake-shoe are operated Ain the usual manner. Any suitable brake-shoe and lever may be substituted for that shown, and the plates B C of the pulley-block have extending wings m n, respectively, and between these wings is adj ustably held a suitable bearing-block J, the adjustability of the block being rendered in any suitable manner, but preferably by set-screwsp, extending through elongated openings o in the wings.
The adjustment of the block adapts the pulley-block for use with ropes of varying thickness or diameters, the bearing-block being adjustable in a direction to or from the IOO brake-shoe to decrease or increase the space between the two, respectively. tween the brake-shoe and bearing-block is rmly held stationary and against slipping through the medium of the brake-shoe pressing the rope against the face of said block. The bearing-block is held stationary between the extending wings of the plates, hereinbefore referred to, after it has been/once adjusted to adapt it to the size of the rope used and' in this respect diiTers from the usual swinging tubular devices through which the rope passes.
It is evident that any suitable form of friction bearing-block may be substituted for that shown and any suitable means may be employed for rendering said block adjustable to change its position Withrelation to the brake-shoe, and any such changes or modications that would come within ordinary mechanical skill 4may be resorted to without in any manner-departing from the principle of the invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A pulley-block and a clamp upon the upper end thereof, said clamp comprising two jaws one adjustable upon the other to increase or decrease the space between the The rope besame, substantially as andfor the purpose specified.
2. Apulley-hlock and a clamp upon the upper end thereof, said clamp comprising two right-angle plates which form the jaws thereof, one of the plates overlapping the other and adjustably connected thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A pulley-block and a friction lbearingblock adjustably connected thereto, and a pivoted brake-shoe and lever depending therefrom and means for engaging the hoistingrope with the lever, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
4. A pulley-block, the center and one of the outer plates thereof between which the pulley is journaled, having extending wings, a stationary bearing-block adjustably held between the Wings, and a pivoted brake-shoe and a lever depending therefrom provided with means for engaging the hoisting-rope with the lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
