Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tackle Blocks, of which the following description and appended claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, form a specification.

My invention is an improved tackle block, and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination'of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The invention comprises an arcuate shoe rigidly affixed to some support, a block pivotally suspended from said shoe and carrying at least one pulley journalled therein below said shoe, said block carrying a rope adapted to operate over said pulley and between a toe extremity of said shoe and said pulley, the arrangement of the parts being such that a weight suspended on said rope will swing said pulley toward said toe under normal conditions and prevent the rope from running in its weighted direction, and at the same time permit an attendant to release the gripping action of the shoe on the rope by manipulating the rope opposite said pulley from its weighted portion and permit said weight to be-elevated or lowered as expedient.

The object of the invention is to provide in the most simple form a tackle block capable of fulfilling its purpose in an entirely satisfactory manner, capable of being manujfactured at a minimum of expense, and that will be durable.

The invention may be used where tackle blocks are generally employed, but is of especial significance where stop blocks operate to advantage.

In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side view showing my improved tackle block suspended from a timher or other fixture.

Like marks of reference refer to corre V spending parts in the different views in which A represents a block, consisting of two spaced cheeks or sides, joined at its bottom by a girt 1, a grooved pulley B be ingv suspended on an axle block near its lower extremity, in the usual manner. Within the upper end of the block a shoe member 0 is placed, and from this shoe the block A is suspended from a pivot member 3 extending into the block sides. Aligned above the pivotal support of the shoe and extending from its upper end is a shank or bolt portion 4, the same adapted to engage a fixed anchorage or support and rigidly hold the same. This shoe at its lower end forms a toe 5 extending in close proximity to the periphery of the grooved pulley B and at a point to one side of the pivotal support of both said shoe and pulley, as shown. The toe acts as apawl or catch and its function is to engage a rope D strung over the pulley B when said rope is drawn taut thereagainst as, for instance, taking up slack in a clothesline, suspending. a weight, etc., on that portion of a rope passing over the pulley under the shoe and toward the heel 6, as in Fig. 2.

That a strain exerted on the rope D from the edge of the block opposite to the toe 5 may be increased, as in taking up the slack or drawing up a weight, tightening a clothesline, etc., the rope is drawn from the edge of the block and away from the toe, as shown in Fig. 2 in which the arrow indicates the moving direction of the rope.

When it is desired to lower a weight or release a strain exerted on a rope from the edge of the block opposite to the toe 5, the toe is released from gripping the rope by pulling the same from the opposite edge of the block and in a direction slightly angular toward its weighted portion, as shown in Fig. 4:, an operation which swings the block on the pivot member 3 and permits the pulley and its rope to move away from 2 within "said the toe 5 and let the rope freely pass over tain the same from further movement of said rope through said block and against 25 through the block. said toe.
