T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. Mnnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shackles for Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the shackle of pulley blocks.

In all shackles of the common construction, when a great stress is placed in the anchoring cable, there is a tendency of the sides of the block being drawn towardeach other, and in consequence binding the sheave against free running. To overcome this objection is the object of my invention and I attain this end by the novel construction of the shackle illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully described.

In such drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved shackle; the full lines showing the device in working position, while the broken lines indicate the relative independent movement of certain parts; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts as shown by the full lines of Fig. 1.

The body of the block, 0., comprises two sides, Z), made with reinforcing rolls, 0, and forked ears d. A sheave e is rotatably joure naled between the sides, on the center bearing 7. A bolt, 9, connecting thelower ends of the sides, holds the latter against moving toward or from each other. Between the forked ears, cl, of the sides I), is pinned an arched latch bar a, which serves as a truss element, so that when said bar is secured in place the upper ends of the sides will be firmly held against moving toward or from each other, in this respect cooperating with the sleeve bolt 9, so holding the bottom ends of the sides, as mentioned. When opening the latch bar, 2', to admit the cable, 4), it hinges on its pin h, the pin j having been previously withdrawn. The pin j is fastened to the block by a chain 70, as usual. The upper portion of the latch bar is channeled out at the ends, so as to provide the forked ears, Z, m, and in the latter are pinned the ends of the V shape link 0-19, by pins 1", 5. To the link is fastened the anchoring cable 2?. As apparent, by reason of the described construction the latch-bar i and link p0 may be moved, as a unit, or the latch bar or the link may be moved independently, as illustrated in Fig. 1; and by this arrangement I give to my shackle the required strength and prevent the undesirable compression of the sides, and at the same time I render my block convenient to use as a Whole.

I claim:

1.. In a pulley-block, the combination with the sides, of a latch bar, fastened at its ends to the upper ends of the sides by means permitting it to be opened, and a draft element having ends secured to said latch bar only by means permitting it to be opened.

2. In a pulley-block, the combination with the sides, the latter provided with ears at their upper extremities, of a latch bar pinned at its ends to said ears of the sides, a draft element pinned at its ends to said latch bar, but not to said ears of the sides.

3., In a pulley-block, the combination with the sides, of a latch bar pinned at its ends to the upper ends of the sides, said latch bar provided with perforated ears adjacent its ends for receiving a link, a link having perforated extremities inserted in said ears of the latch bar, and pins inserted through the perforatedextremities of said link and said ears of the latch-bar.

In a pulley-block, the combination with the sides, provided with ears at their upper extremities, a latch bar having perforations registering with those of said ears, pins inserted through said ears of the sides and the latch-bar, the latter being provided with other ears adjacent its ends for receiving a link, a V-shaped link having perforated eX- tremities inserted in said other ears of the latch bar, and pins inserted through the perforated extremities of the link and the related ears of the latch-bar.
