HERBERT MORRIS AND FRANK BASTERT, OF LOUGHBOROUGH, ENGLAND.
LIFTNG APPARATUS.
Application filed June 26, 1909,
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that we, HERBERT MORRIS and FRANK BAsrnR'r, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at Loughborough, England, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Lift-ing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those forms of lifting gear in which the load is lifted or carried by means of an ordinary welded link chain.`
The invention is more particularly applicable to pulley-blocks but is equally applicable to any form of lifting gear such as crabs, overhead cranes and the like, in which one end of the chain is fixed to some part of the frame of the lifting gear in such a manner that it will safely carry the load, or that proportion of the load which comes upon it, and at the same time be readily detachable. It is usual to attach the end of the chain to the frame of thel lifting gear by means of a special end link, shackle and pin. The end link is special in the sense that it is not of the same proportions as the links forming the chain itself, but is longer and wider, so as to permit the shackle to pass through it, and as a consequence has to be made of material having a larger cross sectional area. The shackle is open ended, the ends being enlarged to take the pin, by means of which it is fixed to the lifting gear frame.
rlhis invention consists of an improved method of attaching the end of the load chain to the lifting gear frame whereby special forms of connection, as described above, are dispensed with. That part of the lifting gear frame to which the chain is attached is so constructed that a link of the chain, of the usual proportions for the size of lifting gear in question, can be attached direct without the use of an intermediate special end link, shackle and pin. Further, the method of attachment is such that the end of the chain may be easily disconnected when required. l
In the accompanying drawing z-Figures 1 and 2 show in elevation and section respectively one method, while Figs. 3 and L1 show in elevation and section respectively an alternative method of carrying our invention into eect.
Referring to Figs. a lifting gear frame 1 and 2, A is a part of having formed in it a Specification of Letters Patent.

recess B of the same size and shape as the end link C of the load chain D shown on the drawing in dotted lines. The end link C is of the same size and proportions as the other links in the chain D. The end link C is placed in the recess B and retained in position therein by a cover plate E fixed to the lifting gear frame with two or more bolts or screws F, F. A slot G is formed in the lifting gea'r frame, and a corresponding slot H in the cover plate E to accommodate the next link of the chain D.
An alternative construction which possesses the advantage of occupying less space than that described above, is shown in Figs. 3 and l in which A is a part of a lifting gear frame having formed in it a recess J of the same size and shape as a half link K of a chain of the same proportions as the load chain D. The half link K is threaded on the end link C of the load chain D and is then placed in the recess J, being retained in position therein by a cover plate E fixed tothe lifting gear frame with two or more bolts or screws F, F. Slots Gr and H are formed in the lifting gear frame and cover plate respectively to accommodate the next link of the chain D.
With either of the constructions previ- -ously described, if desired, a recess corresponding to recess B or J may be formed in the cover plate E, in which case the spaces formed by the two recesses would be of the same size and shape as the end link C of the load chain or the half link K respectively.
lV hat we do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. ln a lifting apparatus, the combination, with a lifting chain; of a flat lifting gear frame having one face thereof formed with a recess wherein the end attaching member of said chain is completely received, said recess being remote from the edges of said frame and conforming to the size and shape of said end member; and a cover plate arranged against said face and secured thereto for retaining said end meinber in said recess, said cover and frame having registering slots intersecting said re cess at right angles to the plane thereof to accommodate the succeeding link of the chain.
2. A lifting gear frame having in its face a recess with curved walls adapted to bearl against and support the outer end of a r said frame and cover-plate centrally across said recess.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses. l
