UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LETITIA BINGHAM MCEVVEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ADMINISTRATRIX OF JOHN MCEWVEN, DECEASED.
CLAMP FOR ROPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,938, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed January 10, 1898- Serial No. 666,234. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LETITIA BINGHAM Mo- EWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, administratrix of the estate (as will more clearly appear by reference to the duly-certified copy of the letters of administration hereunto annexed) of JOHN MCEWEN, deceased, late of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, who did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Ropes, declare that the following is a specification of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved clamp for ropes, its object being to provide a simple, durable, and economic device whereby two ropes or two parts of one rope may be quickly and firmly bound together and as quickly released. It is peculiarly fitted for use upon guy-ropes of derricks, tent poles, and flag-staffs, but may be used upon clothes lines or in lieu of a seizing upon any rope.
The invention consists, primarily, of a camlever in connection with clamping-jaws, and will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing it in operative position upon a guy-rope. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly sectional, showing the clamp in position when in use. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the clamp on line w 00 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of the invention a frame maybe employed having two parallel side walls A A and end wall B, formed integrally from Wrought iron or steel preferably. The walls A A near the open-or free end 0 have apertures in which a headed pivot-bolt a is secured. A cam-lever D, having an arm at extended therefrom,is mounted on said pivot, and upon the free end of said arm is secured an eyebolt or loop cl, projecting at a right angle therefrom.
In the inner end of the. casing are loosely inserted two clamping-jaws, the inner one 1) of which is fluted or serrated on each face thereof, the outeroneb being similarly fluted or serrated upon its inner face, the outer face being plane, and against which the cam-lever bears. Said jaws b and b are provided at one end with T-shaped heads b and b respectively, adapted to prevent them from being drawn between the side walls A and A by the strain upon the rope. The end wall Bof the casing is also fluted or serrated upon its inner surface.
In operation the end of the rope F is inserted from above in the eye d, passed be= tween the end Wall 13 and the inner jaw b, then around the post E and back between the two movable jaws b and b. The cam is then moved against the clamp by means of the arm, and the clamps grip the inclosed rope firmly between them and in such a manner that it cannot be moved except by reversing the cam.
It is obvious that a cam-lever of different design from that shown may be used, also that the eyebolt (1 may be riveted to or formed integrally with the lever-arm d. Ahook may be substituted for said eyebolt. The movable jaws may have T-heads upon both ends there of, preventing withdrawal in either direction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
An improved rope-clamp of the class described, adapted for the duplex clamping and adjustment of two strands of a rope bight, comprising the slidable frame embodying the opposite side walls and the end wall, the clamping plates or jaws inclosed between said side walls and having an adjustable sliding operation within said frame with relation to the 'end wall, means for preventing a front-and-rear movement of said plates or jaws between the side walls by the strain upon the rope, and a cam-lever fulcrumed between said side walls below the plate or jaws and adapted to tighten the latter, said cam-lever having an extended rearwardlyprojecting arm projecting to a position with relation to the main strand of the rope bight and carrying a device adapted to engage with said main strand, whereby the main. strand of a rope bight can be first passed through the frame and then turned and its have signed my name, in presence of two witencl strand passed also through the frame and nesses, this 5th day of January, 1898.

the manner and as set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as M. G. MOCLEAN,
the invention of JOHN MOEWEN, deceased, I B. MCOOMB.
