To all whom it mag/ conoerm Beit known thatI, BYRON STILLsoN, a citizen of the United States, 'residing at Jackson, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Skirts, of whichthe following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in skirts; and the object of the invention is to provide a form of skirt adapted to be adjusted tot any size or shape of Waist or hips and which when Ionce adjusted can be secured to maintain the adjustment irrespective of the,`

placket-fastening devices.

A further object is to provide an adjustable skirt in which the gathers in the skirt will be all intherear, leaving the skirt fitting smoothlyin front and at the sides.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l isa sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modification. A

The letters D D designate suitable fastening devices, such as hooks and eyes, which are secured to the facings or to the ends of the waistband, or to both, for securing the skirt around thewaist ofthe wearer and the edges of the placket-opening together. j i

lIn order to adjust the ski-rt to lit any size or shape of waist or hips, I insert in the waistband on each side of the placket-opening a tape E, which is carried through the open edge of the waistband and for a suitable distance within the same, being secured to the skirt-band at its inner end. A second tape E is secured to each end of the waistband, and by this arrangement it will be observed that the skirt may be shirred or adjusted to any desired degree upon the tape E. After the proper j amount of adjustment has been eected the tapes E and EI on eachside-of the placket-open` ing aretied together, when it willbe seen n `that the adjustment' is thereby made permanent.` The skirt may then be put on or taken off without affecting the adjustment or shirring in the least, the fastening devices operating inthe usual manner.

. It is desirable to provide a second shirring device on each side of the placket-opening a suitable distance below the waistband. For this purpose the strips F and F are secured to the inner face of the skirt by their edges and a tape E2 passed within the space provided between each row of stitching, where it is secured at its inner end.

A tape E3 is secured at the edge of the placket-opening in proximity to the tape E2, and the shirring and adjustment are eected with this set of tapes in the same manner as the upper set heretofore described.`

I prefer that the tapes E' and E3 should be formed of a single piece of material, this being accomplished by passingtape E' down through the tape E3.

Instead of locating the tapes at the extreme edges of .the placket-opening I may set them back a short distance, as shown in Fig. 1. This leaves an unshirred portion on each side placket-facing and issuing it as `of the placket-opening for securing the fastening devices.

Having thus described my invention., what A skirt having a shirring string or tape locatedin the waistband on each side of the placket-opening, a second fastening string or tape secured at the edge of the placket-open- A i'ngion'each side and adapted to tie with the shirring-strings to secure permanent adj ustment, a second shirring-string carried by the skirt on each side of the placket-opening below the waistband, fastening-strings secured at the edge of the placket-opening adjacent said second shining-strings, and independent fastening devices for closing the placketopening, substantially as described.
