mvemon NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JULIUS KAI-IN, OF "WEEHAWKEN HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY, 4ASSIGNOR TO PACIFIC NOVELTY COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A FIRM.
'HAIR-C SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 722,714, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed December 17, 1902K.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JULIUS KAHN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Weehawken Heights, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hairv Combs, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore in dressing the hair where a pompadour eect has been sought a pad known as a rat has been used, over which the hair has been brushed and held in position by means of a comb with substantially straight teeth or by pins, (be.
It is the object of my invention to get the pompadour effect without the use of a rat, and this I accomplish by means of the peculiar shape given to the teeth and body of my comb, thus dispensing with the use of a rat or the like, while the comb simultaneously performs in addition all of the usual functions of a comb.
For a more particular description of my invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this-specification, in which one embodiment of my invention is disclosed.
Figure l is a side or outer face View of my improved comb. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper edge of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. Figs. 4 and 5 are sec-` tional views taken on the lines 4 4 and 5 5 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrows, one tooth only being shown in each case.
Throughout the various views similar reference characters designate similar parts. Y
The comb comprises the usual back 1, to which are attached or formed integral therewith the teeth or fingers 2. These fingers are` curved or arched at 3 in substantially the arc of a circle, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and near their outer extremities are straightened at 4, so as to be substantially a prolongation of the back l. These teeth in the preferred form vary in length and curvature from the center to the sides, those near the center being the longest and having the shortest straightened portion, and the adjacent teeth vary but slightly both as to length and curvature, so that the arched portion of the teeth serial No. 135,478. or@ model.)
appear to have the shape of a rat when the comb is shown in the positions of Figs. 1 and A2. It is obvious that any other desired curvature may be given to the teeth provided the effect of a rat is maintained, and the length of the teeth and that of the curve or arch 3 may be varied and the latter made uniform in length from end tooth to end tooth without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The back l is preferably bent on the arc of a circle and may be made of any desired length, as these features vary with the use to which the comb may be put.
In using my improved comb it acts as follows: When the ends of the teeth 2 are inserted in the hair,`the hair fills the spaces between the teeth and then spreads out over the arched portions 3. This action is assisted by the downward pressure of the back l against the hair, which also tends to force it over the arched portions 3, thus giving the pompadour effect without a rat. The comb is preferably inserted after the hair is otherwise arranged, and so can be used with much less trouble than the rat, which must be worked into the hair as it is made up.
I am aware that hair-combs have been made prior to my invention in which there has been a slight yet uniform curve from the back l to the tip of the teeth. S0 I do not claim, broadly, a comb with teeth having a curve.
What I do claim as my invention is l. A device of the character described having a back, teeth secured thereto and formed with substantially straight ends connected to said back by means of outwardly-arched intermediate portions.
2. A device of the character described having a back', teeth secured thereto and formed with substantially straight ends which form substantially a prolongation of said back and arched portions connecting. said ends and back. n Y v 3. A device of the character described, having a back, teeth secured to saidback of varying length and arched intermediate portions, said arched portions being reduced from the center of the comb to its ends.
4. A device of the character described, having a back, teeth secured thereto having outwardly arched or curved portions adjacent to IOO said back, said arch or curve extending be- I or curve extending beyondaline drawn from yond a. line drawn from the back to the ends of the teeth.
5. A device ofthe character described, having a back, teeth secured thereto having outwardly arched or curved portions, the said curved portions being reduced in length from the center of the comb to its ends, said arch the .back to the ends of the teeth.
Signed in the city, county, and State of New York this 15th day of December, 1902.
