To all whom, it m/cty concern.-

Be it known that LBARCLAY ARNEY JAMES, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to `wearing-apparel pockets; and the invention consists of a peculiar safety-pocket more particularly intended foi-drawers, but adapted and is useful in connection with any article of clothing in which such a pocket may be desired.

In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and use with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure lis a view showing the rear of a pair of drawers with my safetypockets located at the right-hip side thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line a: Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing my special shield.

This invention in its broad conception involves providing drawers with a pocket having special means adapted to provide security to the pockets contents.

More specifically stated, the invention involves a double pocket, in the outer end of which I place a pervious shield of wire-gauze. The outermost layer of the pocket iskelongated, forming a free flap adapted to be turned down between the wire-gauze shield and the outer layer of the inner pocket, the latter constituting the pocket to be protected. Safety against dislodgment of the pockets contents is afforded by an upper iiap depending from a point over the pocket. This'flap is made adapted to receive a similar shield and when turned down to normal position over the pockets mouth may be secured by any suitable means adapted for the purpose. The obj ectof the shield j ust mentioned is to prevent the pocket being cut from the outside and its contents removed. The above statement of the broad features of my invention in connection with the following detail description thereof will render it fully understood.

In carrying out my invention I employ two layers of goods, an outer layer A and an inner layer B. These layers are secured to the drawers bya line of stitching down both sides and along the bottom edge, as shown in Fig. 1. The layers A and B being secured as stated, it is apparent that two pockets C and D will be formed. The outer layer is formed or provided with a free extension or iiap E, adapted to be turned down into the pocket C.

F indicates a pervious guard or shield formed of aluminium wire-gauze, having a sheet-metal or other material protecting edge G. This guard is made conforming to the shape of and adapted to be received by the pocket C and when in `place is secured therein by turning down the ap E to position shown in Fig. 2 between it and the inner layer B.

I-I indicates a flap adapted to extend down, covering part or the whole outer surface of the pocket, and is secured by asocket-fastening of well-known design or by other suitable means. This iiap is secured to the drawers by a line of stitching just above the pocket and has an inner layer I secured thereto by stitching along two sides and the free end thereof forming a pocket J, in which is placed a shield K, similar to the shield F. The inner layer I of the liap I-I is provided with a free extension L, adapted to be turned into the pocket .I of the said flap, inclosing its shield, and thereby securing it in place. I

While I have shown and described an inner layer B, I do not desire to be limited thereto, since the same may be dispensed with without departing from the spirit of my invention.

So far as I am informed, I think it is original with me, first, to provide drawers with a safety-pocket, and, second, to construct a pocket substantially as hereinbefore described and employ therewith a shield of the character stated.

While I have shown my special safetypocket located on the rear of the drawers at its right-hip portion, obviously the same may be placed at any desired location and several of them used, as may be desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is-

l. A safety-pocket consisting of inner and outer layers, a pervious shield conforming to the shape of the pocket and adapted to be placed therein, and a flap extending from one IOO ' pocket, a pervious shield substantially as described.

4. In combination With a safety-pocket having a flap adapted to be turned down in the pocket, a shield conforming to the shape of the pocket and adapted to be secured bythe said Iiap substantially as described.

flap extending from the outer edge of the pocket and adapted to be turned down therein, a removable shield conforming to the shape of the pocket and adapted to be secured by said ap, an upper ap depending from a point above the pocket opening and extending down on the outside of the pocket, a shield Within the upper flap, and means adapted to secure the said upper iiap to closed position over the pocket-opening substantially as described.

6. In combination with a safety-pocket having a flap adapted to be turned down in the pocket, a Wire-gauze shield having protected edges and adapted to be arranged in the pocket and be secured therein by the said flap substantially as described.
