To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES MonsoHL, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at Los Angeles, in the'county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs. of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates, primarily, to a comb for retaining the back coil of a ladys coiffure in position; and the object thereof is to provide a comb of simple construction that when placed in the hair will be firmly held therein and which will not accidentally slip out of the hair. I accomplish this object by the comb described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a modification of the form shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical cross-section of Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A is the back of the central section of the comb,having teeth A united thereto and projecting downwardly therefrom. The outer edges of the outer teeth may be corrugated, as shown in Fig. 1, or smooth, as shown in Fig. 2. I prefer corrugated edges, as they will hold in the hair better than smooth edges. Affixed to the front and rear surfaces of the back of the central section is plate B, which is united atthe central portion by a small central strip B, which extends over the back and serves to hold the central portion of the spring 0 of Fig. 1 and spring D of Fig. 2 from slipping off the top of the back. The ends of this plate project beyond the back of the central section, and in these projecting ends are pivoted the outer or detached teeth E of Fig. 1 and F of Fig. 2. here a high-top comb is desired, I provide the detached teeth with upwardly-projecting tops E, which may be of any desired ornamental shape and which provide a bearing for the ends of spring 0, which are prevented from slipping off by an ornamental clip G, as shown in Fig. 1, or the end might be coiled around the handle. Where a low-top comb is desired, the top F is very short, and the ends of spring D project downwardly between the central section and the detached teeth and are fastened to the detached teeth below the pivot, as shown in Fig. 2, the ends being so bent as to springpress the lower ends of the detached teeth against the outer teeth of the central section. This form of spring may be used in combs with a high back. (Shown in Fig. 1.)

In the use of my comb the lower portion of the detached teeth are separated from those of the central section by pressing on the handles with the thumb and finger, and the comb is then inserted into the hair and the hand removed therefrom. As soon as the pressure on the handles of the detached teeth is released the spring presses the lower ends thereof against the outer teeth of the central section, thereby holding the hair therebetween spring-pressed. This pressure on the hair prevents the comb from accidentally slipping out of the hair. By pressing on the handles of the detached teeth the comb can be easily detached from the hair. If desired, only one detached tooth could be used, and it could be placed at either end, and the spring could be aflixed to the same and to the other section.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A comb comprised of a central toothed section, a plate affixed to the back of said central section, the ends of which project beyond each edge thereof; detached teeth pivoted to said plate having upwardly-projecting handles; a spring affixed to said detached teeth adapted to spring-press the tooth portion thereof toward the toothed portion of the central section.

2. A comb comprised of a central toothed section having the outer edges of the outer teeth thereof corrugated; a plate affixed to the back of said central sections having the ends thereof projecting beyond each edge of said back and having a central strip passing over said back; teeth pivoted insaid projecting ends of said plate having handles projecting upwardly therefrom; a spring passing between the parts of said plate and secured to the detached teeth and adapted to spring-press the tooth portion thereof against the tooth portion on the central section.

3. A comb composed of a central tooth-section; a plate aflixed to the back of said central section having projecting ends extending beyond each edge thereof; teeth pivoted to the projecting ends of said plate; a spring affixed to said pivoted teeth adapted to spring-press the ends thereof against the adjacent tooth of the central section.

4. A comb having a pivoted tooth secured to the end thereof; a spring affixed to said pivoted tooth and to the other path of the comb adapted to spring-press the pivoted 10 tooth against the adjacent tooth.
