TANlDEll/l-SPRING DRAFT-HIGGINS FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 716,458, dated December 23, 1902.
lSerial No. 7.312. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it m/ay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tandem-Spring Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tandem-spring draft-rigging for railway-cars.
My invention consists in the novel devices and novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and specified in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective View showing one of the metal draft-beams and the casing or stop-casting secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 illustrates a slightly-modified construction of one of the parts.
In the drawings,A represents a car-cou pler, and A its draw-bar or shank.
B B are metal draft-beams rigidly secured to the framework of the car or forming a part thereof. These metal draft-beams are provided each with shoulders b Z), said shoulders constituting the ends of a recess b',formed on the inner face of each ofthe draft-beams to receive the casing or stopcasting D,and against which shoulders the ends of the stop-casting abut. If draft-beams are made of cast metal, as I prefer to make them, the shoulders b b will be formed in the casting operation. If, however, the draft beams are made of pressed steel, the shoulders may be formed steel the shoulders may be secured rigidly to the beam in any suitable manner.
C C are the springs, arranged tandem between the followers F Fl F2 FS. Each of the casings or stop-castings D is provided with three integral stops CZ d' d2 for the followers to abut against, and each of the casings or stop-castings is provided with an integral upper flange d3, which serves to strengthen and brace the stops CZ d' cl2 and also as a guide for the upper edges of the followers. The stop-castings D are each also provided with longitudinal strengthening-ribs d d5, which also serve to brace or strengthen the stops d d d2 and the stop-casting as a whole and also to act as a chang-surface for the ends of the followers to it or wear against.
G is the lower and removable guide for the followers, the same being secured to the stopcasting by bolts g, passing through the guide G and the stop-casting at the points where the stop-casting is thickened or enlarged by the stops d d d2. To cause this lower removable guide G to also act as a means for materially strengthening and bracing the stops d d' d2, I provide it with projections or shoulders g g g', which fit in corresponding recesses d d6 d, formed in the lower ends or faces of the stops d d d2. The ends of the guides G also abut against shoulders CF, formed on the lower face of the stop-casting D. In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4 the projections g on the guide G are illustrated as being circular in form and formed in a steel or wrought metal guide-bar by stamping or pressing. Of course in this construction the corresponding recesses are similarly shaped.
I prefer to form the projections g on the guide-bar and the recesses in which they lit on the stop-casting; but it will of course be understood by those skilled in the art that this might be reversed and the projections formed on the lower end of the stops and the recessesin the guide-bar. The stop-castings D are preferably formed in a separate piece from the metal draft-beam B and secured thereto by bolts d8.
H isthe carry-iron, and H the louder-block or end sill.
K is the pocket-strap or eXtension-plate,se cured to the draw-bar of the coupler, and K an abutment-block secured to the pocketstrap and fitting between the two middle followers.
I claim- In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with a pair of metal draft-beams, of two tandem springs, followers, a stop-casting D having integral stops d d d2, projecting to cause the guide plate or bar to strengthen from the inner face thereof, for the followers and brace the stops, substantially as specified.
to abut against, and a removable guide plate Y or bar, said removable guide plate or bar and WILLIAM H' MINER 5 the stops having interlocking shoulders and Witnesses:
recesses at the lower ends of the stops and H. M. MUNDAY,
laterally inside the inner face of said casing 1 EDMUND ADCOOK.
