OUTLET OR JUNCTlON BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,917, dated December 16, 1902. V
Application filed April 1'7I 1902. Serial No. 103,251. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRRIs F. WHIToN, of Hingham, county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Outlet or Junction Boxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to outlet or junction boxes of that type commonly known as knock-out boxes, and is intended as an improvement upon the outlet or junction box shown in Letters Patent No. 697,052, dated April 8, 1902, granted to me.
My present invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of the caps employed for filling the holes of the box and also has for its object to construct caps especially adapted for filling the holes of the outlet or junction box shown in my application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 92,343, filed February 3, 1902, the'holes in said outlet or junction box being other than round; and, furthermore, my present invention has for its object to provide means for filling any small openings or recesses which may be incidentally produced by the ears of the caps made in accordance with this invention.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation and partial section an outlet or junction box embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the caps before it is inserted in one of the holes in the box. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cap shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4-. is a detail showing one of the caps in section and a portion of the box, and Fig. 5 is adetail ot the blank from which the cap is formed.
The box a,made, preferably, as a casting of iron, will be of any suitable size and shape and will have as many'holes for the pipes as desired, the box herein shown for the sake of illustrating this invention having four holes in the end wall and a like number in the side wall. These holes are herein shown as other than round, being of oblong shape, having straight parallel sides and oppositely-curved ends. I do not, however, desire to limit my invention to the particular shape of the holes herein shown. The removable caps employed for filling these holes, as herein shown, consist of end plates 17, each having two ears b, which are disposed at opposite sides thereof. The end plates are made fiat and of a shape corresponding to the shape of the holes and are also made larger than said holes. The cars are made longenough to project through the holes of the box and are bent outwardly at the opposite side of the wall of the box for the purpose of securing the caps in place. The ears are made wide enough to afiord ample strength and security.
\Vhile I have herein shown the end plates as provided with two ears, a greater number may be provided, if desired.
The caps are applied by projecting the ears through the holes and then bending outwardly the extremities of the ears. When the caps have been applied, the end plates being larger than the holes they will cover the same. The caps may be inserted from the outside or from the inside, as desired. After the caps have been inserted in the holes in the box the box is japanned by any usual method and any openings or recesses produced by the caps will be filled, as illustrated in Fig. 4. This is important, as it sometimes 7 happens that in bending the cars a narrow opening is produced at the sides ofthe end plate, which is objectionable; but this opening will be closed by the japan. If the holes in the box are of any shape, the caps will preferably be made of a corresponding shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An outlet or junction box having holes for the pipes and removable caps for said holes consisting of fiat plates made larger than the holes having outwardly-projecting ears at opposite sides thereof which project through said holes and are adapted to be bent over to secure said caps in place, substantially as described. I
2. An outlet or junction box having holes for the pipes and removable caps for said holes consisting of end plates made larger than the holes and cars at opposite sides therename to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MORRIS F. WHITON.
of which project through said holes and are adapted to be bent outwardly to secure the caps in place, and a coating for the box which closes any openings or recesses produced by 5 the caps when inserted in the h01es,snbstan- Witnesses:
tially as described. B. J. N oYEs,
J. L. HUTCHINSON.
In testimony whereof I have signed rnyl
