Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHESTER R. PIEPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of I/Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guy-Strand Caps, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide in a guy strand cap a closed thimble to cover and protect the end of the guy strand on which it is used.
Another object of my invention is to provide in the thimble of the cap an expansible form to permit the thimble to accommodate itself to irregularities of the strand on which it is used.
Another object of my invention is to provide in a guy strand cap, means for clamping the thimble portion to the strand after it is placed thereon.
With these and incidental objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved form of guy strand cap.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the modified form, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modification, while Fig. 5 is an end view of a still further modification, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same modification.
I prefer to construct my improved form of cap by forming from sheet metal a thimble 1 having a closed end 2 and an open end 3. Projecting from the thimble in line with the thimble wall is an extension 4 at the end of which are two tabs 5, better shown in Fig. 2.
The cap is applied to a guy strand by driving the thimble portion on to the end of the strand, and when it is driven on tightly bending one of the tabs 5 around the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the strand, and then bending the other tab back over the first tab so as to securely lock the cap in place.
Instead of the plain thimble shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, I may form the thimble portion with slots 6 punched in the metal to allow the ends of the wire composing the strand to expand in the cap, or I may slot the thimble to the open end as at 7 Fig. 4 and thus allow the thimble to expand when it is driven over strands of irregular shape or size.
Instead of either of these constructions, I may corrugate the cylindrical wall of the cap as at 8 Fig. 5. Vith the corrugated thimble I may employ any number of corrugations, but I prefer to have the number of corrugations equal to the number of wires spaced around the outer diameter of the strand, and have the inner curve of each corrugation of the same radius as the wires composing the strand, so that each wire in the outer layer of the strand will register with one of the corrugations of the cap.
I may either have these corrugations running parallel to the axis of the thimble, or as I prefer, have them at a slight angle thereto as shown in Fig. 6, the angle being the same as that of the spiraled wires composing the outer layer of the strand on which the cap is used.
While I have described my invention and illustrated it in several designs, I do not WlSh it understood that I limit myself to these constructions, as the application in my invention may be varied in many ways within the scope of the following claim.
Claim- As an article of manufacture, a guy strand cap comprising a thimble having an open end and a closed end, the wall of said thimble having corrugations therein extending longitudinally thereof and spiraling said thimble at substantially the same angle as the wires comprising the outer layer of the guy strand to which it is to be applied are spiraled.
