Abstract
1357067 Marine fenders PNEUMATIQUES CAOUTCHOUC MANUFACTURE ET PLASTIQUES KLEBER-COLOMBES 26 May 1972 [26 May 1971 27 May 1971 12 Nov 1971] 25067/72 Heading B7S [Also in Divisions F2 and B8] An article comprises a rubber member which is annular in cross-section and which is resiliently deformable to support a load directed perpendicularly to its axis and at least one annular reinforcing member which is embedded in said <SP>"</SP> rubber member to encircle the axis thereof and which is resiliently deformable in the direction perpendicular to its axis, said reinforcing member comprising at least one hoop made from a thin and flexible strip of sheet metal wound in a flat spiral of several convolutions, said convolutions being superimposed and held solidly to one another, whereby, when the article is stressed by a load exerted perpendicularly to the axis of the hoop, both said hoop and said rubber member are resiliently deformed. The article may be a shock absorbing member (e.g. a ship's fender) or may be a fluid transfer hose. As shown in Fig. 14 a hose comprises: (a) An internal rubber layer 21; (b) Superimposed helically wound metal cable layers 22, 23 of 55 degrees pitch; (c) A plurality of reinforcement hoops 1, each in a radial plane and longitudinally spaced from its neighbour(s), the interspaces being filled with rubber; (d) An outer case of rubber 27. In an alternative hose construction a textile or metallic layer is incorporated, between reinforcement hoops 1 and cover 27. The extra layer is preferably cross ply material with threads at 45 degrees to the tube axis. Each of the wire layers 22, 23 may be replaced by a pair of layers in heavy duty hose embodiments. In a ship's fender the central axial opening may be filled with foam material and the crosssection may be elliptical in the undeformed shape, or may be of the form shown in Fig. 13. The wall thickness of a fender is preferably less than 25% of the external diameter and the fender is conveniently held on a rod through the central aperture. Textile of metal fibre layers may be incorporated. The reinforcement hoops in the article may have their convolutions secured to each other by clips or by an adhering interlayer of rubber between convolutions. A plurality of hoops may be placed concentrically and in end to end contact, the convolutions of the plurality being held by clips spanning all the hoops. Alternatively the reinforcement may be formed from a plurality of coplanar hoops placed concentrically one within another and separated by rubber rings.
