I have designed this invention particularly for use in fireproof'buildiu'gs-of the modern systemin'which steel structures .with fireproof floors, curtain-walls, and fireproof partitions are employed. I may, however, use
. with or in'place of the my. improved fireplace in. connection with buildings of the old style and in conjunction ordinary brick chim neys and flues. l
The invention consists ina certain novel construction of a metal fireplace formed with a. metal throat and preferably provided with a damper in a peculiar position. A specific embodiment of my invention will now be described in detail, and the features. which I consider novel over the state of' the art will .then be pointed out inthe' appended claims.

Theimproved' fireplace, as illustrated byl the drawings, consists of five pieces namely,
the top or throat,E, the front (or-frame) F, which may be ornamented, the back G, and the two sides H, which may also be ornamented. 7 These parts are provided with "flanges" E, F, G,,audH, respectively, and in addition to these the sides. H, the back G, and
front,.F are provided at their top portions Serial No. 109,625. (No model.)
with horizontal flanges H G and F respectively. From the flanges H and G lips H and G3 are projected upwardly at their outer ends, and upon the said fianges,.as well as upon the flange F is adapted to rest the flange E at the bottom of the throat or top E. The parts are'connected in any suitable manner, preferably by screws and nuts, as shown best in Fig. .7, and a suitable packing may be employed at each joint. As illustrated in Fig. 7, thepacking Q may be arranged between the lip Haor G and the outer edge of the flange E or in the form of a gasket between H and G and E. By this construction the joints are efiectually protected against the passage-of smoke, gas, or sparks, even when no packing is employed. The packing may consist of cement, metal, or any other suitable material. character may be used between H and G and G. The top or throat E is a body tapering upwardly'in all directions, and therefore similar to a pyramid. At its highest point, which is at the back, the throat is provided with an outlet L, preferably cylindrical in shape and having an enlargement L at its free end. This enlargemeut is adapted to receive the lower end of the smoke-pipe P,which may be an ordinary drain-pipe sealed in the enlargement L in any As shown best in Fig. 7t,
suitable manner. the outlet L takes about one-half the depth of the fireplace. A damper may be employed, if desired, and this damper may be located within the outlet L, as-in'dicated at K in Fig. 5; but preferably when a damper is employed it is arranged as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
'Here the damper I is elliptical in shape and ispivoted to the inclined front plate of the top, as at J, so that it can be swung down, 'as shown in Fig. 4, to completely free the out-' let, or.it may beswung up, so as to obstruct the outlet more or less. By means of a not located on the inside of the throat E the damper may be secured after adjustment in such amanner that tampering with the damper or accidentally changing its position is guarded against efiectually.
On top 'o'f the, throat, at the lower portion there0f-that is, at the front-I provide a shelf M, which may be stiffened by vertic'al lugs M. This shelf takesthe place'of a fireplace arch or bar and serves to carry the partition-block O, as shown in Fig. 6,which forms the chimney-breast above the fireplace.
The back lining G has a foot N to give it a good bearing upon the floor. The side linings H are preferablyalso provided with feet N and made to converge rearwardly, so as to better throw the heat into the room. The front frame F is removable without disturbing the remainder of the fi replace and may be adjusted forward and backward, if desired.
The improved fireplace abovedescribed may be made of castiron .or any other suitable material, and I desire it to be understood that I'do not restrict myself to the specific construction or materials described.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A fireplace comprisingan open front frame having rearwardly extending flanges at itshorizontal and vertical inner edges,
sides connected with the vertical flanges of the said front frame, and provided with outwardly-extending flanges at their rear and top edges, a back connected with the rear flanges of the sides, and having a horizontal ,fiange at its upper edge, and a top having an lowest point of said slope. 40
3. A fireplace comprising sides and aback in combination with a throat or top resting on said sides and back, and provided with a substantially horizontal portion at its front edge, and with a member inclined upwardly from the rear edge of the said horizontal portion to the rear of the fireplace, and a shelf located upon the horizontal forward portion of the said top and terminating at the sloping rear portion thereof.
- 4. The combination with the sides and back, of a top or throat resting thereon and provided with an upper wall inclined upwardly to the back and having an outlet at its rear portion, and a damper pivoted to said upper wall adjacent to the outlet, and thus adapted to swing down so as to lie close to the lower front portion of said wall or to be swung up to obstruct the outlet more or less.
