Description
ITE AYES 5;
CASSIUS B. NAY, OF FAIRMONT, W'EST VIRGINIA.
FIREP SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OASSIUS BASCOM NAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State. of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in fireplaces, seeking to provide a simple construction by which to prevent the escape of fire or smoke at the top or sides of the front and to furnish a fire and smoke proof front which will be durable, will not blister or peel off at top, can be easily built in place, will aid the draft of the chimney, and will' present a neat appearance when in place.
The invention consists in certainnovel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the fireplace-front. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof from front to rear. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the front, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on about line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The front A has the face-plate B, which face-plate may be of any suitable design or' finish. On the rear side of the face-plate I provide the inwardly-projected side flanges O, which may project rearwa'rdly to any de sired distance to suit the depth of the fireplace and may have their rear edges curved, as shown, or otherwise formed, as desired.
At the lower ends of the side flanges O, I provide the benches D, which project toward each other and toward the opening in the face-plate A, as shown in Fig. 1. These benches D form horizontal offsets at the lower ends of the side plates, and from the ends of said benches next to the opening in the face-plate I provide the'drop-flanges E, which depend to the base of the fireplace and operate to form side walls and also as supports for the benches D.
At the upper ends of the side flanges I provide the upwardly-sloped crown-flange F, which forms an air-space G between it and the top portion of the face-plate B, and over LACE.
Patent No. 628,837, dated July 11, 1 899.
Application filed May 5, 1899. Serial ITO- 715,693. (No model.)
which supports the wall I, the joint between the upper edge of the plate F and the wall I being sealed with cement at 2 the benches D, as is best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The grate may be of any desired form. The front is usually manufactured by cast= ing, the inside flanges being of thin cast-iron molded solid with the front. The inside flanges at their lower ends set back against the back wall of the fireplace, and the side linings of brick, starting on the benches at the lower end of the side flanges, protect said flanges from burning out, and thus make the improvement practically indestructible. Ordinarily there will be about one-half-inch space on each end and back of grate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- 1. A flre-front comprising the front plate provided with the inwardly-projected side flanges and with the benches projecting beyond the adjacent faces of the side flanges and adapted to receive the side linings of brick, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described fire-front provided with the inwardly-projected side flanges, the inwardly and upwardly sloped crown-flange, the benches at the lower ends of the side flanges, and the drop-flanges depending from the benches, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described improvement in fireplaces consisting of the front having the face-plate and provided on the rear side of same with the rearwardly projected side flanges, the benches at the lower end of said side flanges and thedrop-flanges supporting said benches, the crown-flange sloped inwardly and upwardly at the upper end of the front forming an air-space, the arch-plate extending over said air-space and the inside brick linings erected on the benches, sub stantially as set forth.
