TRY-SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,550, dated December 9, 1902.
Application led May 27, 1902. Serial No. 109,192. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BOUNDS CARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and.
State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled' in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in try-squares. It has for its object to produce a try-square at substantially small cost and which shall be effective and durable in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists of a sheet-metal square, the blade and handle in one piece, the latter reinforced and to constitute a straight-edge below the common plane of the blade and handle bya strip of metal parallel with the handle portion and separated therefrom to a suitable extent, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make the same and fully appreciate its advantages, I will proceed to describe my improvements, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective viewof a trysquare made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on` the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of a modification, and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A represents the blade, and B the handle portions, made of a single piece of metal, preferably sheet-steel. That portion of the metal constituting the handle portion B is made of sufficient length to be bent at right angles, as shown at C, and returned in parallelism, as shown at D, the extreme end being bent also at right angles, as shown at E, Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fi g. l, and formed with one or more projections F, adapted to pass through corresponding openings in the blade A and riveted in position.
The thickness of the handle B is governed by the width of the angular portions C andl E in an obvious manner.
In the construction described the try-square is made, as will be readily seen, of a single piece of sheet metal bent in such manner as to thicken and reinforce the handle while at the same time constituting a straight-edge or try-surface below the plane common to the handle and blade. The distance between the handle portion B and its reinforce D is preferably such that the device may be sustained in an upright position when Lnot in use, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3.
Vhile I have shown at Figs. l and 2 my improved try-square made of a single piece and may prefer to so make it, I desire it to be understood that the reinforce portion D4 may be made of a separate piece and secured in proper and fixed relation with the portion B through the medium of interposed metal blocks G and rivets H, as clearly shown at Figs. 3 and et.
In either case, as shown in Figs. l or 3, the reinforce portion D is in fixed parallelism with the handle B and constitutes astraightedge below the plane common to the blade A and handle B, while at the same time strengthening and stiffening the handle.
, Having described the construction and advantages of my improved construction, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A try-square composed of a single L- shaped piece constituting a handle portion B, and a blade A, the handle portion reinforced by a straight-edge D, secured in immovable parallelism with one side of the handle portion and distant therefrom to form a space between the handle portion and said straightedge, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. A sheet-metal try-square composed of a single piece and consisting of a blade portion A, and a handle portion B, the latter bent transversely at right angles and returned longitudinally, and in parallelism with the handle portion and secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
