JAMES N. WHALEY, OF CROWELL, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES H. SELF..
T-SQUARE Application filed October 5, 1908.
Speccation of Letters Fatent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Serial No. 456,192.
To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it 1Known that l, JAMES N. WHALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crowell, in the county of 'Foard and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T-Squares; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in T-squares and comprises the production of a T-square having the ends of the ruling blade disposed on different planes from the body portion of the blade so that lines may be upwardly drawn over sidings.
One of the objects of the invention is the production of aT-square and gage for cutting a novelty siding with a perfect joint.
Nith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my square applied; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l; and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view.
In the drawings which are prepared for illustrative purposes only and not drawn to scale, l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention.
l designates a rectangular block forming i,
the handle of the T-square, said block being formed with an end slot adapted to receive a ruling blade 3. The ruling blade 3 is disposed in the slot 2 of the handle l and is secured thereon by means of suitable fastening devices. The ruling blade 3 is formed with ends 4 and 5 which extend on a different plane from the middle portion of said blade and are connected to said middle portion by obliquely disposed connecting portions 6 and 7.
Heretofore it has been diliicult to draw a g straight line across the siding with the ordii nary T-square owing to the fact that when the pencil point reaches the depression in the siding, the pencil drops into said depression and the thicker part of the pencil comes into engagement with the edge of the ruling blade and thereby forcing the pencil point out of the path of the line to be drawn. With my improved device, it is possible for a mechanic to draw a straight line across a siding just as quickly and as accurately as if he were drawing a straight line across a flat piece of board.
lt is evident that my improved T-square may be formed with one of its ends bent on a di'li'erent plane to the middle body portion of the blade and the other end extended on the same plane to the middle portion.
The handle serves to gage the position of the square. Each ruling blade is made to correspond with the formation and width of different sidings, and the handle is preferably reinforced with brass edging.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what l claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
l. A T-square comprising a blade having one of its ends offset from the middle body portion of the blade and disposed on a difl'erent plane from the plane of the middle body ortion and a handle secured at right angles to the middle body portion.
2. A Tsquare comprising a blade having its ends disposed on a different plane from the plane of the middle body portion and a handle secured at right angles to the middle body portion.
3. A T-square comprising a blade having its ends disposed on a different plane from the middle body portion and on a plane comright angles to the middle body portion.
4. AT-square comprising a handle formed with an end slot, a ruling blade disposed in the slot and secured to the handle, said ruling blade being formed with angularly bent portions and with ends extending from said bent portions on a different plane from the middle body portion.
5. The combination of a ruling blade and a gage handle forming a T-square, said ruling blade being formed with obliquely bent pormon to each other and a handle secured at y tions on either side of the gage handle and my hand in presence of two subscribing Witormdbwth ends extending flrom the obnesses.
i ue y ent ortions and on a p ane common f tdeaeh othe and `diarent from the plane y JAMES N' WHALEX' 5 of the middle body portion of the ruling Vitnesses:
blade. G. L. BURK,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set J. SANDERS.
