B. WILSON, or
CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
RULE Ann T-SQUARE.
Speccation of `Application led August 18 To all whom 1f/may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIEL P. SEGHERS, a citizen of the United States, residingfat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rules and T-Squares,
of which the following is a specification.
, lated,
This invention relates Yto a squaring or drawing instrument of simple. design and construction which employs a common or ordinary form of rule with a head in which it is slidable, and means for holding the rule rmly in any adjusted position.
The object'of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this kind which can be easily adjusted and manipuand although inexpensive in construction, is effective and efficient inV operation. The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts.
In the accompanying drawing# Figure l is a plan view of the face of a rule and T-square constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention showing in broken outlineI the shifted' position of the rule to indicate that it is slidable-with respectto the head; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head and a portion of the rule; Fig. 3 is a bottom view; and, Fig. 4 is a view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the preferred exemplification of my invention, a rule 5` is formed with beveled sides 6 and 7, of which one side, as 6, is graduated in suitable units, as inches, from end to end of the rule, and the other side' 7, is graduated in similar or different units beginning at a point 8 spaced from one end of the rule.
Cooperating with the rule 5, is a member 9 which forms the head 0f the T-square. This head is provided with a slot 10 eXtending from the underside thereof, nearly through the head, and of sufficient width to seat the rule 5 closely, but slidably therein. This slot 10' is preferably equi-distant from the ends of the head, and one edge of the head is formed with a straight edge 11 and a shoulder 12 connected by means of a beveled surface 13 graduated in any suitable units on both sides of the slot 10. The beveled surface 13 embraces a portion of the head between the straight edge 11 and the shoulder 12, which is also a straight edge, that is suiicient to seat or contain the rule Letters Patent Patented Jan. 2S, 1919.v
, 1916. Serial No. 115,571r
5 so that the shoulder 12 is on one side of the rule, and the straight edge 11 is on the other side thereof.y This makes the rule pass through the head at substantially the transverse center thereof.
In order to hold therule in any position to which it may be adjusted, a plate 14 bridges the slot on the underside of the head 9, and is preferably seatedin suitable recesses 15, Fig. 3, which make the plate flush or below the bottom of the head 9. The ends of this plate are perforated, and through each perforation a screw 16 is inserted, which also passes through the head 9 at the side of the slot 10, projecting from the upper face ofthe head. Threaded on the projecting end of each screw is a winged nut 17 by which the screw can be drawn up for tightening the plate 14. By tightening or loosening the nuts 17, the rule can be held lirmly and adjusted in any suitable position. In order to get the rule exactly square, if the slot happens to be too large, the T-square may be applied to the edge of a board, or other surface, irst on edge 11 of the head, and then against the other edge 12, and if the edge of the rule is exactly square with respect to the edge of the head, lines drawn along the edge of the rule will coincide.
If it is desired to measure a specific distance from the graduated edge of the head 9, in either direction from a given point, it is desirable to adjust the rule so that the line 8 coincides with the graduated edge of the head. l
Instead of the plate 14, a pair of washers may be used in engaging each side of the rule to clamp it in any adjusted position.
I claim `1. In a T-square, a blade member, and a removable head having a straight edge and a shoulder spaced therefrom and also constituting a parallel straight edge connected with the other straight edge by an inclined portion which is provided with graduations.
2. In a T-square, a rule, and a removable head having a straight edge and a shoulder spaced therefrom also forming a parallel straight edge, an inclined portion connecting the two straight edges, and means for securing the rule to the head with one of the straight edges on each side of the rule.
3. A T-square comprising a rule and a slotted head in which the rule is slidable, the head being formed with two straight edges disposed flush with the opposite sides of the rule when the rule is positioned in the slot of the head.
4. A T-square comprising a rule and a head formed with a transverse slot in which the rule is slidable, with two straight edges spaced apart and connected lby a graduated inclined portion so that the said straight edges are located flush with the opposite slides of the rule when it is positioned in the s ot.
5. In a T-square, a rule and a head having a straight edge and a shoulder forming another straight edge and connected to the irst named straight edge by an inclined graduated portion as thick as the rule, a slot extending transversely through the head and through said inclined portion, and means to bind the' rule in the slotso that :one straight edge is on one side of the rrule and the other straight edge is on the other side thereof.
6. In a T-square, a head having a transverse slot extending from one side nearly through the head, a rule slidable in the slot, means to engage the underside of the rule when it is in `the slot, and fastening devices for said means operable from the upper side of the head for clamping the rule in any adjusted position.
7. A T-square comprising a transversely slotted head, a rule slidable therein, a plate to engage the underside of the rule, a pair of screws extending through the plate and through the head from the underside thereof the rule, and
at the edges of but not through winged nuts on top of the head the ends of the screws.
8. In a T-square, the combination with a slotted head, of a rule slidable therein having two beveled'edges on the same side therefor engaging the rule when it is in the slot, said fastening of August A.
of, and fastening means for engaging below y means comprising thumb screws for tightening either edge of the rule in the slot.y
9. In a T-square, the combination with a head having a straight edge and a shoulder forming another straight edge and spaced from the first one by an inclined portion with a slot extending from the underside through the first-mentioned straight edge and the said inclined portion but not through the shoulder, a rule slidable in the slot having a thickness substantially that of the said inclined portion so that there is a straight edge above and below the rule, and means engaging the underside of the rule within the plane off the underside ofy the head for clamping the rule in position in the slot.
10. In aT-square, the combination with a head having a straight vedge and a shoulder forming another straight edge and spaced from the first one lby an inclined portion with a slo-t extending from the underside through the irst-mentioned straight edge and the said inclined portion but not through the shoulder, a rule slidable in the slot having a thickness substantially that of the said inclined portion so that there is a straight edge Iabove and below the rule, a plate extending across the slot for engaging the un.- derside of the rule, a countersunk portion being provided therefor in the underside oi the head, fastening screws engaging both ends of the plate at the edges of the rule and extending upwardly through the headI anda winged nut for engaging each screw on the upper side of the head by means of which either or both sides of the plate may be clamped against the underside of the rule.
In testimony whereof I, have signed my name to this speciiication, on this 15th day D. 1916.
EBHEL P. SEGHERS.
