HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 71 5,333, dated December 9, 1902. Application filed January 2,1902. Serial No. 88,188- (No model.)
'to that class of horse-collars in which the ordinary removable hames are dispensed with, their place being taken by metallic clips or draft-heads inserted into and forming part of the collar.
In order that my said invention may be more fully understood, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of my invention applied to a horse-collar. Fig. 2 represents a section of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view enlarged, showing the clip removed from the. collar. Fig. 4 represents a slightly-modified form of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a device applied to the collar in a somewhat-different manner from the preceding forms.
In the several views the same letters of reference are employed to designate similar parts.
A represents the body portion of the collar, made up in the usual manner, and B is the roll of the collar. The free ends Ct at of the body portion A are brought together, as shown in Fig. 2, for the middle seam.
O is the clip or draft-head, preferably made of metal and taking the contour of the side of the collar. This clip or draft-head C is provided with a portion D, bent off substantially at right angles to the remainder of the clip, this bent-off portion D being provided with a plurality of perforations or slots cl cl, preferably extending throughout its length.
E is the eye or hook of the clip or drafthead,to which is attached the traceconnector.
The bent-0d portion D of the clip G is adapted to fit into the middle seam of the collar against the ends act of the collar-body A, and for this purpose the clip will have substantially the shape shown in Fig. 3. Upon the side of this portion D of the clip 0 is lapped one of the ends I) of the roll B, the other end I) lying against the ends a (6 upon the opposite side of the collar. Through these ends a a b b and through the slots or openings 61 cl of the clip 0 is passed the stitching F, forming the middle seam of the collar, the whole being thereby firmly held together. Instead of using a stitching, however, any suitable means may be employed to hold the roll to the body of the collar.
In using the form of clip shown in Fig. i the stitching or other means employed in holding the roll and the body of the collar together is passed through the perforations G of the bent-off portion H. The edge of this portion H of the clip is preferably bent up into a roll I, which performs the function of a reinforcement immediately behind the middle seam of the collar, as this roll I will bear against the inner side of the material forming the casing of the roll of the collar. In this form of the device it will be seen that instead of the clip or draft-head extending along the collar for some distance, as in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the clip is much shorter; but it will be understood that the length of the clip may be varied as desired, as I do not limit myself to the precise forms shown.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a somewhat-different form of clip. This clip is provided with the usual eye orhook E; but instead of the body portion being passed beneath the covering of the roll of the collar the loop J is lapped around the outside of the roll of the collar, the end j being brought together close to the inwardly-bent portion 7' of the clip at the middle seam of the collar. These two portions j and j are then clamped together in any suitable manner, such as by rivets or bolts passed through the perforations o 0.
While I have illustrated and described my invention as embodied in only several forms, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the-precise form shown and described, as many modifications and changes might suggest themselves to any one skilled in the art.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a horse-collar, the combination of the body portion, and the roll of the collar, and a clip or draft-head adapted to be inserted into the middle seam of the collar, said clip having a bent-off portion provided with a plurality of perforations, and stitching or the like adapted to secure said body portion and roll of the collar together, and to pass through said perforations in said clip or draft-head.
2. In a horse-collar, the combination of the body portion, and the roll of the collar, and a clip or draft-head adapted to encircle the roll of the collar, and means for securing said clip at the middle seam of the collar, substantially as described.
3. In ahorse-collar, the combination of the BONA ALLEN, JR.
