Beit knownthat we, THOMAS B. MAGRUDER, residing at Port Gibson, Claiborne county, and ISAAC C. GRIFFITH and LEVI W. SWAEFORD, residing at Vicksburg, Wrarren county, Mississippi, all citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting Devices for Bands and Straps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specication.

Our invention relates to a device for use in connectinga band or strap to a connection of any sort, and refers, primarily, to what is known as trace-carriers or back-band hooks for plow-harness. The same construction is, however, applicable to Suspenders for personal wear and to various other situations where it is required to connect a band or strap to a connection of any sort in such a manner as to be readily adjustable.

The device consists of a metallic or other plate bent upon itself to form a partially-closed trough, and provided with one or more slots or openings extending along the plate into the walls of the trough or channel, and a lockingpin having studs or projections which causes the material of the strap or band to be securely engaged in the hook or carrier. The device is also provided with a hook, hole, or projection by means of which the trace or other part is engaged.

The manner of making engagement between the band or strap and buckle is to fold the band upon itself, press the folded end into the trough or channel, and insert the pin between the folds of the band from the side of the carrier with the projections along the open line or edge of the trough, and when the proj ections register with the slots in the body of the hook or carrier draw upon the band above the said hook or carrier, and the pin will be turned until its projection or projections are caught by the upper end of the slots, and the band will be securely held5 The accompanying drawings illustrate our invention.

A is the band or strap, which may be the back-band of plow-harness, the body of a suspender for personal wear, or any other desired exible band or strap.

B is the body of the hook, buckle, or carrier. This body may be made of sheet metal of suitable thickness and rigidity5or it may be cast of metal or formed of any other suitable material 01 in any suitable manner. In it is formed a trough or channel C, which is substantially circular-in outline and is drawn well in along its longitudinal edges C O', so that the slit or opening C2 is of less width than the diameter of the trough or channel. The two edges C C are on the same or nearly the same plane with each other and with the entire inner face B of the device, so that a smooth plane surface is presented for the band to rest against and form a smooth surface for the'side of the horse to come against, so that there will be the least possible amount of rubbing upon the wearer, whether man or beast.

One or more slots b are cut in the body of the device and vextend into the trough or channel.

D is a hook, opening, or projection, to which the trace or other part is affixed.

E is a pin of a size somewhat smaller than the trough C, which bears a projection or projections e, according to the number of slots b in the carrier,

The band or strap A is folded upon itselt` and the fold inserted in the trough C through slit C2. Then the pin E, with projection or projections c in line with slit O2, is pushed in from the end of the trough between the folded thicknesses of the band until the projection or projections e register with the slot or slots b, and then by drawing upon the upper portion of the band the pin will be turned until roo the projections meet the upper ends b b of SlotsV b with the band or strap between them, which will be securely held.

It is evident that the invention can be applied to many situations besidesthe backband of harness, and we do not desire to be v limited in its application to any particular situation or situations. 1

Having thus described our invention, What- We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-A nation with a pin having vprojection or projections @and means for attaching a trace or other part, as set forth.

2. A connecting device for bands and straps, consisting of a body B, having the partiallyclosed trough C and slot or slots b, and a hook D, in combination with a pin having a projection or projections, as set forth.
