BROW-BAND FOR BRIQLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,706, dated October 2, 1894.

Be it known that I, CHARLES Hoeo HART- WIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brow-Bands for Bridles; and I do hereby declare that the following is atfull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide a brow-band for harness that will be simple and cheap and that can be manufactured at a greatly reduced cost and will possess both strength and durability and be orv namental in its appearance, which objects I attain by a brow-band constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of a brow band constructed in accordance with my invention showing a portion of the metal covering partly broken away; Fig. 2, a sectional view on an enlarged scale.

In the accompanying drawingsA represents a leather strap of suitable length which is folded upon itself to make the two thicknesses a b, the latter forming the leather lining to the band and the former mentioned thickness constituting the exterior or outer portion of the band.

Over that portion of the strap forming the thickness d or front portion of the band, is secured a metal covering B which is struck up from sheet metal by suitable dies and of the form shown. The covering has a central corrugation 0 extending longitudinally throughout the length of the covering, and side corrugations d which bite the leather when the covering is secured thereto andassist in holding it in place.

The covering B has overlapping flanges e at its edges which overlap the edges of the leather as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The covering may be ornamental or plain as found desirable and may be constructed of any suitable metal.

The metal covering being corrugated and bent around and over the edges of the leather gives strength anddnrability to the front of the brow-band and avoids the use of any rivets or other fastenings being required to hold the covering in place.

The leather strap forms its own loops by folding the strap upon itself to form the double thickness, one of said thicknesses constituting the lining to the band and the other thickness the outer or main portion thereof and over which the metal covering is secured. It will be seen therefore that the brow-band with its loops f and its metal covering, is constructed of two pieces only, viz: the leather strap and the metal covering therefor, the two thicknesses of the strap being united by a central line of stitches.

If desired a pin or rivet as shown at g may be used upon the ends of the metal covering to fasten the ends to the leather, but this is not absolutely necessary and may be dis pensed with.

It should be noticed that the metal covering is in no manner a lining interposed between two thicknesses of leather simply as a strengthening medium to the band,but forms the double function of a means for strengthening the band and as an exterior covering to present an ornamental front thereto.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A brow-band for bridles, consisting of a leather strap folded upon itself to form the end loops, the lining and the outer portion, said layers being stitched together through their longitudinal center, and a sheet metal covering having flanges which overlap the edges of said outer portion to form an ornamental front to the band and a means for strengthening it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
