ABRAHAM N. JOHNSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CAROLINE S. YOUNG, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINED SHOULDER-BRACE AND SUSPENDERS..
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,307, dated November 25, 1902. Application filed April 9, 1902. Serial No. 1011982. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/perm Be it known that I, ABRAHAM N. JOHNSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shoulder-Brace and Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to suspenders and shoulder-braces.
The objects of the invention are, first, to provide a comfortable and efficient shoulderbrace adjustable to suit the figure of any person; second, to provide suspenders which will support the trousers without altering the shape thereof or constraining the movements of the wearer, and, third, to provide a tab which will securely hold the button and consisting of a body a, having three pivots or studs 1) for connecting by attachments c the suspender-webbing, of which oldesignates the shoulder-straps, e isa cross-brace, and fpendent back-straps. The said attachments 0 consist of single pieces of wire provided with, a
studengaging eye g, a twisted waist h, and bent ends to form tongues 11, which are inserted intubesj, stitched into loops Zcof the aforesaid web-pieces dand f. The said cross-brace, preferably elastic, is simply passed around its respective attachment-tubes and is provided with a buckle 1, whereby the spread of the hangers may be regulated.
A tab to is provided for each shoulder and back strap and comprisesa continuous piece of wire doubled midway of its length, which is bent up to form a bifurcated hook at, the
ends extending upwardly so as to form a button-receiving loop or ring 0, above which it is twisted, as at p, thence bent in opposite transverse directions, and again folded back to form terminal tongues r. The said straps pass around tubes 8, in which tongues r are socketed, and are severally provided with a suitable fastening device t upon its free end for adjusting reach of suspenders, both front and back, to meet any requirement.
The application of the invention is as follows: Straps d are thrown across the shoulders and all the tabs engaged to the trousers-supporting buttons by passing the rings 0 thereover, when the straps, both front and back, are adapted as to lengths, as before described, so that the hangers a will be positioned to bear against the shoulder-blades or approximatel y thereto. The buttons (see Fig. 2) rest upon the bight of the tab-hook, the thread or other securing means passing through the slot u thereof, thus preventing all friction or cutting thereat by the supports, and consequently the button remains in place indefinitely. Furthermore, the tabs being made of spring-wire, preferably, the hook ends thereof exert a pressure against the buttonface to retain the opposite convex surface of its depression seated in the aforesaid slot, thus preventing any accidental displacement, yet at the same time permits of the ready casting off intact of the Suspender-ends by a downward pressure of the thumbs upon the tongue socket-tubes of the tabs.
In practice I find that most satisfactory results are obtained in the use of a single button for each of the pendent supports, those in front being located about midway between the front opening and the side seams and the two back ones about two inches in the rear of the said seam, by which arrangement the suspenders must slacken when the wearer stoops or bends forward, and not, as in every other suspenders with which I am familiar, putting an extreme tension upon the back buttons, which is the most frequent cause of bagging at the knees when sitting down.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined shouldenbrace and suspenders comprising shoulder-straps. pendent backstraps, a cross-brace, two hangers each provided with three pivotal studs, connections between said hangers and said brace and straps and a button-tab depending from each of said straps, such tab having a button-receiving loop intermediate of its length and a hooked end to prevent the displacement of the button, substantially as described.
2. Acombined shoulder-brace and suspenders com prisin gshoulder-straps, pendent backstraps, a cross-brace, two hangers each provided with three pivotal studs, connections between said hangers and said brace and straps, means to regulate the lengths of the said brace and straps, and a button-tab depending from each of said straps consisting of a continuous wire doubled at its mid-length, said fold bent up to form a hook, the ends formed into a button-receiving loop above which it is twisted and thence making two oppositely-pointed hooks for engaging with the said straps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM N. JOHNSON.
