SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,824, dated. November 18, 1902.
Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial No. 76,832. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WHITE, Jr., residing at Madison, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Closures,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a closure or stopper for a bottle, and more especially to that class of closures which are used to close the mouths of 1nilk-bottles. A disk of card or paste board is-now generally used to close the mouth of such bottle, which has a groove in the neck thereof, into which the edges of the disk fit. These disks are not easily removed from the groove, and as a rule they are removed by pressing them into the bottle or sticking a fork or other handy sharp-pointed instrument in or through the disk, by which it is pulled out of the bottle. This mars or destroys the disk, so that even if replaced, as often becomes necessary when only a part of the contents of the bottle is used, the bottle is not closed tightly. Not only this, but it often happens that in using such an instrument to take out the disk the neck of the bottle is marred, cracked, or broken.
The object of this invention is to provide such disk or stopper with means by which the stopper may be readily removed from the bottle without injuring or marring it or the bottle in the least, so that the stopper may be replaced in the bottle, completely closing the mouth of the bottle as if the stopper had not been removed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents aplan View of the closure having the means attached thereto by which it is removed from the bottle. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the closure. Fig. 3 is aside View of a bottle, the neck being in vertical section to show the location of the strip or closure in the neck of the bottle.

The part marked 1 represents a bottle.
2 is the neck of the bottle, and 3 the groove therein.
4 is the closure in the shape of a disk, which is usually made of cardboard or pasteboard. The top of the disk is provided with a strip 5, by which the disk may be easily removed from the bottle. The ends of the strip are left free, so that it may be turned up, as shown at 5, to be readily grasped by the hand to remove it from the groove in the neck of the bottle. This strip maybe pasted or attached to the disk in any other desirable way. In use the disk is pressed into the mouth of the bottle until its edge snaps or fits into the groove 3, when the mouth of the bottle is securely sealed. When it is desired to move the disk to obtain access to the contents of the bottle, it is only necessary to take hold of one or both of the finger-pieces 5, when the disk may be readily pulled out of the groove without injuring or marring the disk or the bottle, so that said disk may be again used to close the bottle when only a part of the contents are removed therefrom.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A closure for a bottle consisting of a disk, a strip connected along its middle portion to the upper surface or side of the disk, said strip having its ends free to be grasped, whereby the closure may be removed from the bottle.
2. A closure for a bottle consisting of a disk of cardboard 4, and the strip 5 on the upper surface of said disk, said strip having the outer upturned ends 5 as and for the purpose set forth.
